msosby.jpgAccording to police in Adrian, Michigan, 17-year-old Marshall Sosby fully intended to kill his parents.

So earlier this week -- Tuesday, to be exact -- the cops say Marshall picked up his dad's 9 millimeter semiautomatic and killed his 37-year-old mom, Carmen, and his father, Michael, age 40.

Young Marshall called 911 around 10 that night and told what the police believe was a bit of a fib. Marshall said his mother shot his father before turning the gun on herself. Only she somehow managed to shoot herself in the back of her head, which probably cast a bit of doubt on the suicide claim.

The cops questioned Sosby. It became clear to them that he was the one who pulled the trigger. Speaking to local press, Adrian deputy police chief James Schwartz said that Sosby "gave several reasons" for his alleged actions. One reason was that Marshall's parents took his cell phone away.

But police don't believe the elder Sosbys were victims of an impulse crime. Marshall's act, said James Schwartz, "was premeditated." Sosby, said Schwartz, "intended to kill his parents."

Marshall wasn't just charged with open murder on Wednesday in Lenawee County, MI -- he was also charged with witness intimidation, felonious assault, and assorted firearms charges.

It was through questioning Marshall's friends that police came to believe he planned the whole thing. He'd allegedly discussed what he wanted to do -- though I imagine other teens passed this off as so much bullshitting.

Marshall Sosby was ZombieKiller90 on MySpace.com. There were several photos of him holding guns in his profile photo albums -- the sort of stuff mainstream news articles always seem to note as if it is somehow significant. But if the kid had easy access to a 9 mm, he probably had easy access to other guns, so photos of him dressed in camouflage and holding guns aren't really strange or all that notable.

More interesting to me was a post he made to his MySpace blog in July of this year. It, too, was the sort of thing many teens write, think or say, but in light of Marshall's alleged discussing of the murders with friends, it seems like it might give some insight as to his mindset. He didn't feel like his family at home was truly his own.

Marshall titled the post "Family" and wrote, in part:

if u want 2 be part of my family talk 2 me and if u can think of any other family thing just say some thing

Was Marshall Sosby trying to reconfigure his life, hoping that he could jumpstart things by faking his parents' murder-suicide? Perhaps. He allegedly threatened siblings with the gun after his parents were dead as well; was he thinking of taking it a few steps further? Maybe he was just trying to rid himself of what he perceived as his biggest obstacles -- mom and dad.

Sosby is being held without bail in the Lenawee County Jail.
