Police in Harris County, TX say 38-year-old Dannette R. Gillespie waited in the car while her daughter -- all of 15 years old -- and Vanessa Anne Ocampo robbed and killed bar owner Eugene Palma.
For their efforts, the teens and Ms. Gillespie pulled in a whopping $15. Fifteen bucks and charges of capital murder.
Reports out of Houston, TX say it all went down on Wednesday, Sept. 3. Gillespie, her daughter and Ms. Ocampo were on the lookout for someone to rob. They ended up in the bar owned by the Eugene Palma, age 75, Gene's Better Times bar. The trio hung around until Mr. Palma headed home in Cadillac convertible. Police reports say they didn't know Mr. Palma -- I'd say the Caddy was probably all the bait they needed.
During police interrogation, Vanessa Ocampo told the cops that once the group followed Palma home, Dannette Gillespie doled out knives and told the girls to go rob the elderly man.
So Ocampo, along with Gillespie's daughter (not named in the press because she's a juvenile) exited the car and ran up to Palma's garage. The girls allegedly stabbed the bar owner a number of times and took the only money he had on him, enough to put 4.5 gallons of gas in the car, at best.
Eugene Palma was found dead, face-down in his driveway, on Thursday morning.
A palm print on Palma's caddy led the cops to Gillespie and the girls. Gillespie and her daughter were arrested in Houston. Vanessa Ocampo was picked up in San Antonio.

It seems to me that with a mother like Dannette Gillespie, her young daughter didn't have much of a fighting chance, did she? Do we know what kind of relationship 19-year-old Vanessa had with the elder Gillespie?
Posted 09/07/2008 at 05:31:27 PMI grew up with the older Gillespie, she was trouble when we were kids. Always thought she was tough and ALWAYS got her butt kicked. She married right out of school, had several kids, abused the children and stabbed her husband. He divorced her, and got custody of the kids. She must of had her weekend visitation when this happened. I know from the buzz around town, that people want to see her FRY. Her daughter didn't have a chance with her. She was probably in fear of her own life, if she didn't comply with her so called mothers demands. Danette is trash and always will be!! My heart and prayers go out to Gene's family and friends. First I'd like to say that in NO way am I deffending the actions of these people.... Yes she married right out of school yes she immediately had 2 kids... yes the marriage failed, however they never got divorced she never stabbed him and NO HE NEVER TOOK ANY responsibility for their kids.... So for this so called classmate of hers get your stories straight before trashing her anymore than she deserves.

Posted 11/24/2008 at 02:10:53 AMvanessa was friends with gillespies daughter. and whoever the classmate is, you got your story totally wrong. the man she stabbed was not her husband, it was her boyfriend who at the time was beating the crap out of her. the time she stabbed him he was on drugs and flew off the handle. throwing stuff and hitting her, and her daughter. the stab was self defense. not taking up for gillespie at all tho. and your right her duaghter didnt have a fighting chance. but get ur story straight. and the father absolutely did not have custody. the father was never around. i was at the gillespie house almost every day. and so were her 2 children. their dad never EVER came by but once that i saw. dannette had a rough life, which doesnt change anything she did. but its sad, if they were not on drugs, it never would have happened like this. drugs do stupid things to people and make you do stupid things. these people werent like this. their lives made them like this. nobody cared for them, they had few friends. every man in dannettes life treated her like crap. before you go throwing out names and telling people things that arent true, remember, these are people too. the kids father was no good, paid no child support, barely called. left dannette to do it all her own. and the kids resented him for that. not that dannette tried her hardest at all, she could have tried a lot harder to give these kids a better life. if she could have stayed off drugs, maybe she would have been a better mother. when she was on them she was a whole different person. she was mean and hatefull and not herself. she held a grudge against life itself. and thats what messed her up.

Posted 05/07/2010 at 04:48:56 PMI went to Bonnette Jr. High School with Dannette, I was also a friend of Gene's and it is all tragic, Dannette was not a troublemaker, in school, and she was very tough and never got her ass kicked, so thats bs, whoever you are that said that. I cant defend her actions or imagine what brought her to do such a thing? But she was in an abusive relationship and the boyfriend she had did abuse her and she stabbed him in self defense.She was very friendly in school and was a beautiful girl, sad scene all the way around
