Comedian and actor Dane Cook has often been accused of stealing material from other comics. I avoid watching Cook, so I don't know if there's any truth to that. It wouldn't technically be a crime if he did, anyway, just dishonest and skeevy. Cook's brother and long-time business manager Darryl McCauley allegedly went far beyond anything like plagiarism in dealing with the performer's personal fortune, though and he's been arrested as a result. According to Massachusetts AG Martha Coakley, McCauley appropriated millions from a client between July 2007 and the end of 2008. The AG didn't say the client was Cook, but other publications are reporting the comedian was indeed the victim here. At one point, McCauley even allegedly forged a check to himself from his client to the tune of $3 million.
A lot of publications seem wary of saying McCauley is indeed Cook's brother, and I'm not sure why. McCauley is referred to as Cook's brother in this article written two years ago. According to the piece, Cook once worked at a restaurant and McCauley was his manager. Several articles from 2006 about the possibility that Dane Cook was dating Jessica Simpson contain a quote denying the hookup from his "brother," Darryl McCauley.
Then there's the obituary for Dane Cook's mother, Donna, published in 2006 in the Boston Globe, which read in part, "She leaves behind her children Kelly McCauley-Amann and her husband Larry of Braintree; Darryl McCauley and his wife Erika of Wilmington; Dane Cook of Los Angeles, CA." So yeah -- Dane Cook has allegedly been ripped off in a huge way by his own brother.
See, it's one kind of story if a comedy superstar was [allegedly] seriously ripped off by his business manager -- it's a very different story if that manager was his own damned brother. [bizjournals.com, BostonHerald.com]
I've never met Dane Cook but I do know and respected his brother Darryl McCauley and wife Erika. I just learned of this on the news tonight and still find this all very hard to believe. I for one, will have to have this proven to me, as I believe the two hard working individuals I've known, to be honest and fair people and very proud of brother Dane's success.

If Dane says that he didn't authorize his brother to cash checks in the millions, and it is found that his brother indeed cashed checks in the millions, then there you have it.
I actually saw Dane's earlier stand-up routines and I thought that he was very hilarious. I didn't like him as much later on, but, I do love funny people and he seemed like one of the funniest comedians I had seen in a long while.
PS It's interesting to me that each and every time somebody is accused of a crime, friends come out of the woodwork to defend them...but in this case, I would doubt that authorities would simply arrest Darryl for no good reason. It might be that Dane himself had gone to the authorities. Flesh and blood or not, stealing is illegal.

It also stated that Darryl has been Dane's busines manager since the early 90s, however the embezzlement took place over the past 18 months. It went on to say that years ago Darryl managed a fast food restaurant and gave Dane his first job at that restaurant.

Posted 01/15/2009 at 08:02:40 AMYou never did know how to spell Harvey.How dare you talk about being robbed, after saying for years "kids I don't want your mother's money" and then taking half during the divorce, even though she was terminally ill with cancer. Money that was only there because her kids helped her pay the house bills for years. She always felt good that someday she could leave us with a small inheritence with the sale of the house.On her deathbed she was still apologizing for trusting you ,and not being able to help her family.
