A 48-year-old police sergeant who heads his department's Organized Crime Unit vanishes without a trace. Signs of a struggle are left behind. Sounds like the sort of story you might read in a New York paper, maybe hear in news reports out of Chicago, right?

Nope. We're talking about Sgt. Faron White, of Decatur, Alabama, a city of 56,000 located near the Tennessee/Alabama border.

Sgt. White disappeared last Friday from his office at the Decature Police Dept. There was evidence in the office that something happened, but no one has found any sign of the 5'6", 200 lb. police officer since.

White heads Decatur's Organized Crime Unit, which, according to The Huntsville Times, handles "illegal drug[s], gambling, prostitution, money laundering and similar crimes." Other crimes investigated by the Organized Crime cops in Decatur include illegal sales of alcohol and contract murders.

As you might expect, local law enforcement is all over this case. If you think you know something about the disappearance of Sgt. Faron White, you can call (256) 341-4717. [Blog.al.com]

UPDATE

As noted in the comments on this post, Faron White has been arrested in Las Vegas. It looks as though the disappearing act was meant to conceal the theft of $2500 from White's unit at the Decatur PD. A 29-year-old woman named Sarah Richardson was also arrested at her home in Decatur. She allegedly helped White flee the state. [AP]
