Since March, 20 horses in the Miami area have been found murdered. Animal rights activists say it stems from a rising market for their meat, which can fetch up to $40 per pound on the black market. It's considered a delicacy in certain cultures, and some people believe it can cure things like AIDS and cancer.

None of this is true, of course, but the myths have been enough to sustain the killing spree. All 20 animals were found butchered. And horse owners in the area were forced to check on their animals hourly to make sure they were okay.

But police have nabbed at least one man. Luis Miguel Cordero hatched a plan to kill two horses in Miami Gardens and promised to pay a friend $2,000 to help. The friend, however, decided it was the better part of valor to rat him. So police had the ranch under surveillance when Cordero arrived. Investigators don't think he's responsible for the other attacks, but the ranch owner doesn't seem concerned about that. "It's great, great - I hope he dies in jail," Lourdes Perez told WPLG-TV.
