Milwaukee Serial Killer: Police Have Now Linked Walter Ellis to 9 Murders... and Counting
| Joyce Mims |
Using DNA from a toothbrush found at a Franklin, Wisconsin motel where he was arrested Saturday, police charged Ellis is the strangulation deaths of Joyce Mims, 41, and Ouithreaun Stokes, 28, prostitutes who were killed a decade apart in north Milwaukee. Mims, say relatives, was dating Ellis' uncle at the time of the slaying. (Investigators don't want the suspect's photo publicized until they're done showing it to witnesses.)
DNA has tied Ellis to at least 9 dead women who were murdered between 1986 and 2007. But the case could be complicated because other men were charged for two of the murders...
| Ouithreaun Stokes |
Curtis McCoy has already been acquitted in the 1994 murder of Carron D. Kilpatrick, 32. They were living together at the time and had a daughter.
Chaunte Ott spent 13 years in prison for the slaying of 16-year-old runaway
Jessica Payne, the only non-prostitute among the victims. He was released earlier this year after semen found on her body was linked to Ellis. But police believe Ellis only had sex with her and was not her killer.
Ellis managed to elude capture all these years because Wisconsin apparently didn't have his DNA in its database. He'd been arrested 12 times between 1981 and 1998, when he last did a five-year-stretch for reckless endangerment. But the state didn't start demanding DNA samples from all felons until 2000, and Ellis' apparently wasn't grabbed while he was in prison.
