Breakfast Reading: 'America's Toughest Sheriff,' Joe Arpaio, is Actually Its Most Corrupt

It's called the constitution and the bill of rights, all governments, state and local, must abide by them. Trust me, you wouldn't want local governments being able to run things any way they want. If they could then even a Iraqi native wouldn't want to go near Detroit.

• Wow at all these comments supporting Arpaio and saying things like "Every jail in the country should be like this". We're not talking about prison, people. Innocent until proven guilty - 60% of all inmates in jail are awaiting trial, therefor legally innocent. Also, felons don't occupy jail cells, they go to prison.

• The uber-liberal papers in AZ that cover Maricopa County are notorious for leaning far left, in favor of illegal activity, sympathetic of criminals and encouraging of criminal lifestyles. Everyone knows that nearly everything they print that isn't precisely the who, what, where, when, and sometimes how, then it is them sneaking in their opinion to ruin whomever they dislike. Please. I'm so sick and tired of criminal lifestyle rationalizers who happen to work for newspapers. Sheriff Joe is hard on criminals because we as a society want criminals to suffer for their crimes. The more criminals suffer, the less time they have to sit around dreaming up new ways to harm us again. That is the exactly correct consequence of being a criminal. Not for just the victims to suffer, but for their victimizers to suffer. You say the reason AZ crime isn't responding to Sheriff Joe's methods. Really? I'm skeptical. You need to do more to convince me than just say so. One aspect of crime and punishment in America that is definitely not reducing crime is we in fact are not prosecuting every crime, not suitably punishing every criminal, not delivering swift and sure justice. You act like every criminal is caught, swiftly prosecuted, receives the right punishment and the victims are doted on by everyone around them and made whole. That is definitely not happening and we all know it. Crime pays more and more in America everyday. Now, justice purely depends on which state you live in. At least in Maricopa County, Sheriff Joe picks on the criminals. Until someone supplies concrete evidence that Sheriff Joe is, in fact, corrupt, I'm going to stubbornly like him, what he does and how he does it. And even if someone comes up with "evidence" that he is corrupt, I'm liking him anyway.

• @STEVE, and other Arpaio apologists: You can continue to entertain your seething contempt for illegal immigrants, as it's your right to do so, however, it's pretty important for all of us to have a reasonable expectation that law enforcement won't conduct itself using unfair or extralegal means. In this country, our legislative bodies--not police departments--make laws. Law enforcement doesn't have the power (thankfully) to decide for itself what conduct is legal and what's not...and in this country, it's most definitely illegal (and wrong on oh-so-many levels) to single out and round up people of a particular race--that's selective application of justice. Hate the break the news, but illegal immigrants don't only come from Mexico, and most certainly aren't all Latino. What about Europeans who overstay their tourist visas? The Southeast Asians smuggled in cargo containers? All the while, American citizens are being pulled over and forced to prove their citizenship simply because they're brown-complected. Also, it's pretty clear that Sheriff Joe's intentions are not geared toward benevolence to the county, but for his own self-aggrandizement.

• I am an Arizona native, born and raised (30 years worth) in Phoenix. What the majority of that state has become is hateful, racist, and not a good place to raise children. Joe just feeds the hatred, and he's not making any substantial progress on lowering the crime rate. I used to be proud of my Arizona heritage, but I am ashamed to admit to it anymore. Hatred breeds hatred. Maybe if people there would change the way they approach things like illegal aliens, they would find the problem fixes itself. Concentrate on the actual CRIME in the state, stop pointing fingers at each other.

• I've become accustomed to, and have grown to tolerate, people saying "give free reign" instead of "give free rein" when they mean allowing something/someone to do whatever it pleases. When you "give a horse free rein," you loosen control. "To reign" means to be generally recognized as holding a kingly position. The substition is ignorant, but I understand it. But this is the first time I have seen the expression "is reigning back," which is completely meaningless. Does anybody edit this thing?

• I live in Yuma, AZ, and I think if you don't know how it is in Arizona, you should probably keep jerking off to the Creeps section of this website.

• I have lived in AZ twice. Sheriff Joe is not codling criminals and its too bad if you don't like it. All jails should be run like his is. As for illegals, if you don't like things here GO HOME.

• This guy is a sleezeball racist. He must get off on seeing guys in pink underwear, how does that solve or help anything? Finally someone is calling him out on his gusto to violate civil rights.

• This story is full of holes, Arpaio is a Law fighting Hero. 1st- He is elect by his people. 2nd- He has to up hold state & county laws 1st 3nd- His law enforcement duties are to the people of his county not the federal gov, nor ACLU, nor any illegals 4th- by state law he must arrest all criminals with warrants and detain all illegals for ICE. 5th- HOW HE DOES THIS JOB is no concern of anyone outside his county or AZ. FEDS should but out/stop over reach/this is not fed jusdiction.
