A Catholic priest in Chatham, New Jersey was found dead this morning in his home. Father Ed Hinds of Saint Patrick's Church was scheduled to say Mass at 8 a.m. this morning, but when he didn't show, a parishioner went looking for him.

The father was found dead in the kitchen of the rectory. Police won't say how he was injured or what weapon might have been used. All we know is that Father Ed was killed sometime between 11 p.m. last night and 8 a.m. this morning...

Ironically, police and Secret Service agents were just at the church last night to teach kids about internet and personal safety. Their appearance reportedly attracted a wall-to-wall crowd.

UPDATE: Medical examiner says Father Ed Hinds was beaten to death.

The father's body was found with "multiple traumas," though police aren't elaborating on the specifics. Since the father worked with the poor, Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi says the assailant may have been someone Father Ed helped in the past.

"This was a community leader whose arms were wide open to the downtrodden. Maybe one of those individuals was involved. That kind of generosity is preyed upon."
