Athena Shepherd even looks evil, doesn't she?
Someone must have declared this Wicked Momr Week in the western states. After learning of this horrific child abuse case in Oklahoma City, we now turn to Athena Shepherd, the Evil Stepmother of Portales, New Mexico.

Shepherd and her husband Mern were arrested after teachers at their daughter's school called the cops saying the 10-year-old was malnourished. The case bears eerie similarities to the LaRhonda McCall case in that one child picked on while the rest were apparently spared. The details aren't as brutal, but when it comes to cruelty involving a little girl, there's not much sense in splitting hairs...

According to police, the girl says her family hates her. She was forced to eat alone in the kitchen away from the rest of the family. While they watched TV, she was locked her bedroom. Her stepmom even made her eat on a timer. If she wasn't done after a few minutes, she was given allergy medicine to make her sleep and jailed in her room. While the other kids got a ride to school, the girl was forced to walk.

She had to ask her stepmom to use the bathroom, but Athena often refused to let her go. At night, she was still forced to wear diapers, and her head was shaved for not taking care of her hair. She was whipped with a belt on her butt, where child welfare workers found bruises.

The girl's brother told police was she was punished for breaking a chair, and that she wore diapers because she wet the bed.

Athena denies abusing the girl, claiming she was not malnourished, just small. She admits to locking the girl up at night, but only because she was getting into things. Yet she apparently didn't straighten out her story with her husband before he talked to police.

Mern Shepherd admitted that Athena treated the girl poorly, and backed the girl's story. If you read between the lines, he was a weak sister who wouldn't stand up to his wife. He says he works long hours away from the home, but he broke down when cops questioned him on the treatment of his daughter.
