Missing: 16-Year-Old Karamjit Kaur Believed to be Victim of Foul Play
UPDATE: Karamjit has been found at an America's Best Inn in Merrillville, Indiana with her brother-in-law. We'll bring you the details as they become available...![]()
Karamjit Kaur went for a bike ride and never returned
Sixteen-year-old Karamjit Kaur had only been in America for eight months, but she was off to a fine start. Despite still learning English, teachers at Reno's North Valleys High describe her as an outstanding student.
But the East Indian girl was still learning the nuances of this country -- things like it's probably not a good idea to go for a bike ride in your pajamas. Which is what she did Wednesday night just after supper. No one's seen her since.
The bike's been found at a nearby elementary school. But there's no trace of Karamjit. Both police and family say there's little chance she ran away. ""She just barely started school here and so no friends, no phone or any access, so we know for sure someone kidnapped her," says her uncle Joginder Singh. "They keep thinking she run away and she come back, but I told them, this won't happen. She has no friends, no boyfriends, no fights or any kind
of argument."
Police have searched the area with helicopters and dogs, but so far found nothing. They've also checked on every sex offender in the area.
UPDATE: It now appears Karamjit was meeting an older man at school, unbeknownst to her family.
Students at North Valley High have been calling a Reno hotline to let police know that an older Indian man had been visiting her at school during her breaks. Karamjit is from a fairly traditional Sikh family and rarely leaves the house with being accompanied by her father or her brother.
It's unknown if the man is related to the case or not, but he's wanted for questioning. Karamjit was just learning to ride a bike, and she usually didn't ride far from the front of her home. When she disappeared, she was wearing just a T-shirt and pajama bottoms. She apparently didn't take a purse or anything else with her, suggesting she had no intention of going anywhere on her own.
