Reader Alison responds to Richard Collins Charged with Chaining Runaway Son to a Car Bumper. As she see it, this is not a case of child abuse:

"Maybe the dad was not only trying to keep his son safe but trying to keep society safe from his son. A parent who lets their child run with gangs deserves a child endangerment charge more than a dad who cares enough to restrain his child in an attempt to keep him from them.

"I really think in this case DHS got in the way and just sent a strong message to that delinquent teen that he's the one with the power. The bumper didn't endanger him or injure him. I feel really quite sorry for that father and the uncle. It's a case that will have a chilling effect on parental discipline of out of control teenagers. Maybe if those kids who killed Kim Cates were chained to a Camaro bumper, she'd still be alive."
