[UPDATE] Son-in-Law Christopher Harris Arrested in the Gee Family Massacre
Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 9:43 pm
A judge ruled Christopher Harris mentally cruel in his divorce from the Gees' daughter
The former son-in-law of Raymond "Rick" Gee has been arrested in the slaying of five people in Beason, Illinois on September 21. But a whole lot of questions remain unanswered.
Christopher J. Harris, 30, of McLean County, Illinois, will be charged in the beating deaths of Rick Gee, his wife Ruth, and three kids aged 11-16. A three-year-old daughter survived the attack. But the question remains why it took the Logan County Sheriff's office so long to get their man.
Harris, we can conclude, would have made an obvious suspect from the start. He was divorced from Rick Gee's adult daughter Nicole in 2007 after a judge ruled that he'd been mentally cruel. In the he-said, she-said world of divorce court, you have to be a pretty mean bastard for a judge to tag you with the cruelty label. And in May, Nicole had gone back to court to get a hike in child support, giving him plenty of motive to be pissed off once again. Finally, Harris drives a primer gray pickup police have spent a week searching for...
The kind of truck police had been searching for
Then there's the possible involvement of Nicole Gee. Neighbor Marjorie Wright said she saw Harris move a gray pickup into Nicole Gee's garage a few days ago. Since Beason is a tiny town of just 200 people, and residents have been on high-alert since the the killing, it's impossible to believe Nicole was unaware that police had been searching for this kind of truck.
Christopher Harris sucked as a husband and father
That seems to be the case if you believe his MySpace page. In March, the unemployed contractor wrote that he "Made up with Nicole!! We are having a son!!" Judging from news photos, it also seems he attended the family's funeral.
The couple already have two kids, and Harris was enrolled in Lincoln college in hopes of someday becoming an architect. But his past indicates he's something of a bum. He had previous busts for theft and pot possession in the late 1990s, and had recently quit his job as a cashier at the Dixie Travel Plaza in McLean.
As some of our insightful readers have noted, Nicole's family couldn't have been happy that Harris was back in the picture. The cruelty ruling suggests he was a huge dick as a husband and father. And since quitting his job, it looks like he sucked as a provider as well. Would you want this guy as your son-in-law?
We still don't what role -- if any -- Nicole played in the case. But since she was seen allowing Harris to park his truck in her garage, we're guessing police are paying her a whole lot of attention right now.
UPDATE II: On her MySpace page, Nicole Gee says her on-again, off-again husband would have never killed her family:
"(I've) known him (since) I was 14v years old and very, very well. He is and always has been a great father to his kids. In all our years he never laid a hand on me, never even raised a hand to me. Not even once did he spank our little girl, I always had to be the bad guy because he is soft-hearted.
"Now not only has my children lost 5 very close family members but (their) daddy is being set up and taken away, this is too much."(I'd) like to know how in the world the(y) can say he and him only killed our family when there is hard solid evidence of all 6 of them fighting for (their) lives and Chris had not even the slightest nik (sic) on his body anywhere."
She doesn't explain how Harris could be such a sainted father after she divorced him for mental cruelty, but we suspect there will be a lot more revealed before this over.
Jason Harris, Jennifer Earnest and Sarah Duncan are accused of somehow conspiring the case, though police won't release details
Whenever Harris and his on-again, off-again ex-wife Nicole Gee had a fight, relatives say he would retreat to the Armington, Illinois home of his younger brother Jason. Now Jason, his girlfriend Jennifer Earnest, and her mom Sara Duncan of Sarasota, Florida have all been charged with obstruction of justice.
Police have searched their home, but they're not saying what they found. They've been very tight-lipped in the case, so we have no idea what kind of evidence they have to support the charges.
