Now this wasn't just any naval ship. It was the 525-foot La Somme, the command ship for the French Navy in the Indian Ocean. Needless to say, it packed a little more muscle than your average unarmed freighter. The bad guys opened up with Kalashnikovs before discovering their error, so the French chased one of two attack boats down and captured its crews.
It was a rare win against the Somalis, who attacked 130 merchant ships last year, usually holding them and their crews captive until a ransom is paid.
