Police found Jasper Howard stabbed outside a school dance
UPDATE: Police have arrested a suspect in the murder. See update after the jump...

University of Connecticut starting cornerback Jasper Howard was leaving a school dance just after midnight this morning when a fight broke out between two groups of people. Howard and another person were stabbed.

Police responded at about 12:30 a.m. to find the victims. Howard, 20, was later pronounced dead at a hospital. (See his Facebook page here.) The second victim, who hasn't been named, was treated and released. Police are still looking for the attacker, and believe the assault wasn't a random crime.

Howard is the third Connecticut student to be killed in the last three months. In September, Yale graduate student Annie Le was found murdered in a laboratory building at the campus. Coworker Raymond Clark was arrested in the case...

In May, Wesleyan University student Johanna Justin-Jinich was working at a school bookstore when police say a man who was stalking her, Stephen Morgan, walked in and shot her to death.

UPDATE: Police have arrested 21-year-old Johnny Hood as a suspect in the murder.

The Hartford man was identified as being involved in the fight, but gave cops a fake name when interviewed. He hasn't been charged with the murder, but he has been hit with interfering with an officer and breach of peace. Since he's being held on $100,000 bond, however, it's safe to say detectives are looking at him as more than just guilty of lying to the cops.

Hood is a dental assistant and part-time student at Capitol Community College. He was identified by another UConn football player injured in the incident, 19-year-old receiver Brian Parker, who suffered only minor injuries in the fight. The fight apparently involved about six UConn football players against several other people. The coroner's office now says Jasper Howard died of a single stab wound to the gut.

Police seem poised to make additional arrests. Attorney Deron Freeman says a client, who he refuses to name, had his home searched in Bloomfield, Connecticut, and expects him to be arrested shortly. Freeman, however, contends the man was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Ironically, the day Japser died should have been one of triumph. He was about to become a first-time father, and that afternoon he had 11 tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in a game against Louisville, receiving a game ball from his teammates. He was also leading the Big East in punt returns at the time of his death.
