15-Year-Old Marie Blee Disappeared Without a Trace 30 Years Ago
| Marie Blee, 15, disappeared 30 years ago after attending a party. |
Following the dance, Marie went to a party held in the Shadow Mountain area. Her escort for the latter part of the evening was 18-year-old Monte Doolin. When Marie never returned home that evening, her parents were devastated. It just wasn't like Marie to not call when she was running late...
"It's been a nightmare," Mona Blee, Marie's mother, said recently. "It's something we think about every day."
A few days after Marie disappeared, Doolin reportedly called the Blees and demanded a $5,000 ransom for Marie's return. However, when police investigated Doolin he denied knowing what had happened to Marie, and without any hard evidence to pursue him further as a suspect the cops had little choice but to look elsewhere for clues. Doolin was nonetheless convicted of telephone harassment charges.
The areas outside Grand Junction are vast and the terrain often rugged. Searchers covered as much territory as possible, focusing mostly on digging up suspicious dirt mounds, examining several wells and other places where a body could be hidden, to no avail. Marie had simply vanished.
The last search for Marie occurred about four years ago, after a local law enforcement agency received a tip that she may have been disposed of in a well northwest of Hayden. Their search again ended in failure.
"It was difficult sitting there," Mona said. "They wouldn't allow us to be right close to where they were doing the digging because of contaminating evidence... It was alright until I would think about what they were looking, digging for, and then that would bother me... I always look around and wonder where she is."
Marie's father, Paul, believes that someone knows what happened to his daughter, and he is hopeful that anyone with information, regardless of how insignificant it may seem, will come forward so that he and his wife can find out what happened to their daughter.
