| Why no one checked on Shannon before 11 a.m. is anyone's guess |
Sometime between 3 a.m. and 11 a.m., seven-month-old Shannon Lea Dedrick disappeared from her family's trailer home in Chipley, Florida. Police are releasing few details in the case -- not even the parents' names -- making the whole affair a mystery.
Why Shannon wasn't checked on before 11 a.m. Saturday morning remains up in the air, but police were summoned to the home moments later. The private drive to the trailer is rarely traveled, and neighbors say a strange car would have surely been noticed...
More confounding is that police say they have a person of interest in custody, and that this doesn't look like an abduction. But rescue workers have spent the last two days conducting an arm-to-arm search within a half-mile radius of the house that has since expanded.
Shannon is 2-feet tall and weighs just 11 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. She could neither walk or crawl, so she didn't take off on her own.

Poor little mite..... I think we can guess where this is headed.
Posted 11/02/2009 at 04:32:52 PMSeven months old and ONLY 11 pounds? My grandson weighed 14 LBS when he was just 2 MONTHS OLD! Were they starving her?
Posted 11/02/2009 at 11:06:58 PMWOW!!!!!! another one in Florida??? what the hell are they putting in the water down there that's causing this kind of behaviour??? I can't believe how many kids keep disappearing from that state. and I agree spjones...she sure wasn't over eating.
Posted 11/02/2009 at 11:57:34 PMI've often thought the same thing that ME said. Personally I think that state must be our hell on earth. Did the baby have a medical condition that would warrant her low weight? How criminal - I pray that she is found alive. There have been too many little kids murdered.
Posted 11/03/2009 at 01:48:50 AMI'm wondering if this is a drug related situation.....Also, unless this baby's low weight makes her appear to have a rather large head, could she have a syndrome of some sort.......and if so, I pray she doesn't need any meds for it......Sounds so very much like the missing little girl where the stepmother is suspect (I think the stepmom's name is Missy-she married the missing tot's father shortly after she went missing) My prayers are with this baby.....Nursejeanne
Posted 11/03/2009 at 08:51:03 AMWhy no amber alert ? where is this baby? we will pry for a safe return!!

First you may not judge on the child's weight. My daughter weighed just 17 pounds at 18 months old. She was completely off the growth charts. The dr said from the amount of food she was actually over eating, her weight would however lead to believe otherwise. 5 years later at 6 and a half she is 51 inches and weighs a measly 45 pounds. She is perfectly healthy, yet her weight is only in the 5th percentile for her age and height. She is constantly eating, I actually have to lock food up. She eats breakfast, goes to school, comes home and eats non stop until dinner. Typically she will eat a sandwich, a bowl of cereal, an apple, grapes, and whatever else she can sneak without me noticing until it is too late. I do however find it odd they did not call police until almost 11:30. Maybe they just thought she was sleeping. Who knows with such little explanations. My son used to sleep until 11 or 12 if I would let him, and I assure you, on nights he was up at 3 or 4 in the morning, I would. Although in one report I read it stated they noticed her missing around 8am. I could understand a 30 minute delay to make sure a loved one did not take her but a whopping 3 hours? We don't have much to go on with the reports given. Hopefully she is found safe and sound, though police apparently know more than they are letting on and they are searching feilds and dumpster it is not too promising. I pray I am wrong on speculating.
Posted 11/03/2009 at 01:44:43 PMFor those whom are so ignorant as to think that this epidemic of child abuse and neglect is confined to the state of Florida "You are Ignorant." There is evil in every state and on every street corner. Evil has no home, as it is everywhere.
Posted 11/03/2009 at 09:04:19 PMThe fact that there have been cases over the past couple of years that have received the media coverage that make the state of Florida stick out in everyone's mind is nothing more than a coincidence. Let us not forget the tragedies that have affected all of those precious children in other states that perhaps did not get the media coverage that Florida has. It doe's not change the fact that our children are dyeing. In short if you you want to point your finger in an accusing manner, remember there are three more pointing back at you. Seriously to blame a state for the actions of a human being is idiotic.
NewsChannel 7 Confirms The Names of Missing Chipley Baby's Parents

There are a few new details tonight in the case of a 7-month old baby, missing from her Chipley home. NewsChannel 7 has confirmed the names of Shannon Dedrick's parents, Christina Mercer and Rusty Dedrick.
Posted 11/03/2009 at 10:30:21 PMThat babie's head is very oversized. What with that, the low set ears, and the below average weight-I wonder if this infant is hydrocephalic. If so, maybe the many expensive doctor visits and procedures casued mommy/daddy to snap and kill the kid.
Our local paper says that law enforcement doesn't anyone else to be in danger. And that the parents haven't said why they waited so long to alert anyone. Hmmmmm-I think mom and dad are in trouble.
Posted 11/04/2009 at 12:46:18 PMAt seven months of age she couldn't even crawl??? The more I read, the more I think the parents must've been overwhelmed-even after hearing that a babysitter is suspect. Did the parents work-either of them?
Posted 11/04/2009 at 12:54:37 PMI agree about not judging her weight. Yes, it is possible that the parents were not feeding her, but it is also possible that she's just a peanut. My first son was almost 9 pounds at birth and weighed a whopping 20 pounds when he was 7 months old, but my 2nd son was only 6 lbs at birth and is only 19 pounds at a year old. It just depends on the kid. I really hope she is found alive, but I'm guessing that just like so many other cases like this, she will not be. What a tragedy.
Posted 11/04/2009 at 05:16:54 PMthis is so sad i only live like 2 miles from brown st. i cant believe how stuff like this is for real why?
Posted 11/04/2009 at 07:52:49 PMI just found out from a reliable source that missing baby Shannon Lea Dedrick has been found and is alive and well. LEO's found her at the home of babysitter Susan Baker. This has not reached the wires yet. I got the report at 12:30am EST. I am from the Chipley, Florida area and have been keeping close tabs on this case.

Posted 11/05/2009 at 04:03:23 AMi am from chipley and had been in shock for the hole week our town is suppose to be safe now this. thank god they did not stop look for her. i'm a mother and my child is my world. i would be the first to be looking for her. their is noone that i would live my child with w.o doing a background check. i live up the road where they found her you never know who or what kind of people live near you... god has answered our prays. i hope they can make our children have a safer place to live.
Posted 11/05/2009 at 12:40:01 PMI think the reason that we see so many cases from Florida is that laws pertaining to what can be released to the press is very lax. The news agencies can report at will on cases in Florida and are given plenty of fodder. Unfortunately, these things happen everywhere, everyday in the US. Has anyone noticed that Baby Shannon is expressionless? I wonder if her problems stem from a syndrome, autism perhaps or abuse. Maybe a combination. Poor little thing. I hope she gets a good home now & the powers that be won't be so all fired concerned about returning her to a mother who DOES NOT WANT HER!!!!
Posted 11/06/2009 at 01:26:06 AMPeople elsewhere have commented on how no one can hear a baby crying under a bed, in a box. Well, this baby is different. She can't even crawl at seven months. Her expression is completely vacant, void of intelligence. Just blank. I wonder if she ever cries. It's like mentally, that kid is just not "here". Her oversized head just wobbles around on it's neck. Since she's managed to live for this long-she really needs to be raised somewhere that has the resources to give her the special care she'll most likely need for her entire life.
I could be wrong, but she sures looks devoid of thought. I wonder if mom used drugs during pregnancy.
