ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - One of the teens accused in the brutal murder of an Albuquerque woman has been in the news before when he burned down a family's house because a girl wouldn't go out with him.

Ryan Vigil, 19, was convicted of arson in 2006. He served two years in a juvenile lockup before his release last year.

In June 2006, Vigil burned down Loni Petry's Rio Rancho home. Petri said the incident happened because Vigil had a crush on her daughter, and her daughter didn't return the affection.

"He then came in and torched the house with the dog and cat, and smirked," Petry said.

Vigil now faces adult charges, along with codefendant Chris Midyette, 19.

According to police, Brittni Carlini, 20, went to Vigil's home Thursday night to exchange a snowboard. Then after an argument, Vigil said Midyette struck her two or three times with a baseball bat.

The police report quotes Vigil as saying that he and Midyette took her body to a rural part of Rio Rancho, dug a shallow grave, burned the body and buried it.

At the suspects' first court appearance, Carlini's grandfather struggled to describe his feelings

"I just don't know quite why this happened. I just don't understand it," Howard Carlson said.

Petry said the gruesome incident takes her back the June 2006 arson. Police told Petry, Vigil dug a grave in his backyard and said it was for Petry's daughter.

"There's no way a kid, that kid, is going to be rehabilitated, digging a hole for us, killing our animals, and brining down the house, there's no way," Petry said.

At suspects' arraignment Monday, Carlini's relatives applauded Judge Daniel Ramczyk for slapping the teens with $1 million bonds.

"Given the horrific nature of the allegations, Mr. Vigil, I do find you a danger to the public," Ramczyk said.

Police said Vigil told detectives that he and Midyette argued with Carlini about a planned snowboarding trip just before the killing. It's not clear how that led to murder.

This is horrifying.

There doesn't seem to be any way to establish that the murder victim knew of the prior arson incident but if she did and still chose to be around him then this sort of thing was inevitable.

It's sickening how people with speculate, make assumptions and spread rumors not just about someone they know nothing about, but one who's life has been taken by two low-lives and who can no longer defend herself. No matter what mistakes made in life, if repented may be overlooked in death. Good judgement comes from experience, experience comes from bad judgement. In this case it was bad judgement. Britt and Ry were friends, she shouldve known about his previous convictions and avoided it. i love brittni and miss her, but its unfortunate that such a beautiful girl could have put herself in a bad situation. Obviously these guys were seriously confused about something. Obviously there were some real issues with them and there is nothing this girl could have done, involving pot smoking, that could have ever brought upon such an act. For some sad reasons people will always blame the victim. When my son(Garrett Joe) was heinous murdered in Socorro, NM by three selfish teenagers ages 18 and 19 at that time. People started blaming him for his own death, it was sad. I went through alot of pain to this day I am scarred forever from these teenage murders. People do not see the victim as innocent when victim get out numbered by the killers. All Suspects lie about their malicious act when they killed an innocent child of God. Sad. Being a pot head had not so much to do with it,as the fact he had no conscience. By the time a child is seven or eight, whatever passes for a conscience is developed. This boy had none. And after being released from juvie after what he did the first time, he was ready to commit something more serious, and he did. He should have been incarcerated for much longer. And he should have received serious, ongoing therapy. But people don't usually get that kind of serious treatment in the penal system or in the juvenile system.

There are many people that are born without conscience. No ability to feel bad about what they do. And certainly no ability to feel empathy for their victims. This kid also had poor impulse control. A sociopath. There is no cure for this. He should be put away permanently with no possibility of parole.

The US Department of Justice estimates that Alcohol is involved in 40% of all violent crimes in America. How many does Cannabis contribute to? 0% except those cases involving violent dealers (which wouldn't exist if it was legal).

Unlike alcohol, cannabis does not fuel aggressive behavior. Ask a police officer the last time they had to stop an assault where cannabis consumption was involved. Then ask the last time they got a call to take care of an assault where alcohol consumption was involved. You will hear them state repeatedly that alcohol fuels aggressive and potentially violent behavior whereas pot does not.

It's too bad that some of you would condemn somebody who innocently might use Cannabis as their drug of choice instead of yours (probably alcohol).

Please do not judge so harshly. You are talking about a real person, one who was my cousin. Brittni was a 20-year-old young woman and she may have experimented with drugs, but that does not justify murder. Most of us were impulsive when we were young. If every young person who ever tried drugs or who did not act on their best judgement were murdered, there would be very few people who lived past 20. This was a girl who went to college and had many people who loved her. Don't condemn her, condemn those who took this young flower away.

Of course drug addiction could be a factor in this murder. Yes, victims can place themselves in bad positions. The article (ARTICLE btw, this isn't a court) is not suggesting that the girl was murdered under the influence of pot, but that she was killed partly because of her association with illegal drugs. Pot didn't make her killers more aggressive, but they may have become aggressive when threatened by prison or fines. It's not a stretch at all.
She had bad friends, which put her in the unfortunate position she was in (roadtrip with two crazy guys). As a parent I wouldn't want my kid in the pot-smoking cliques, and I'll let yall "speculate" why.

My goodness, to those of you who believe that her pot use got her killed, you are ignorant. Pot heads are the nicest people on earth. They sit at their homes or friends homes and get high and laugh. You don't get high and go kill people or try to get yourself killed. Ryan Vigil told a story to the police about his horrific crime and decided to claim Chris Midyette was the one who killed Brittini. Chris was not even there! He hasn't talked to Ryan Vigil for over a month. Ryan was angry at Chris for dating Brittni when Ryan was in Juvi for burning down another girls house. Chris has been accused of something he would NEVER EVER do and the media has only reported Ryan Vigil's "story". Ryan Vigil has destroyed more than 2 lives with his evil twisted actions....and I am certain Brittini was not killed because of pot. Ryan killed her because he was obsessed and rejected, then blamed Chris to "get back at him" for a few dates with Brittini over a year ago. I offer my Prayers for the family and friends of Brittini and Chris. Chris Midyette is another victim of Ryan's...hopefully the police investigation will prove the truth and allow dear sweet Brittini to rest in peace and release Chris from unjust incarceration.

I would just like to say, that as Chris' family, we would just like to express our extreme sympathy to the family and friends of Brittni Carlini. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A man accused in the slaying of a CNM student has died after spending the day in intensive care for treatment after an attempted suicide Wednesday night, officials said.

Bernalillo County officials say medical assistance was administered immediately to 19-year-old Ryan Vigil after he was found hanging by a sheet from his bunk at Metro Detention Center, where he'd been in isolation.

He was admitted into the University of New Mexico Hospital. Bernalillo County officials said Ryan Vigil was pronounced dead at approximately 2:10 p.m. Thursday.

Chief Of Corrections Ron Torres said Vigil had undergone a psychiatric evaluation but was not on suicide watch at the time of the attempt.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office is investigating. Jail officials also are doing their own investigation.

Vigil was arrested Sunday along with Chris Midyette in connection with the death of 20-year-old Brittni Carlini. Authorities say Carlini went to Vigil's home last Thursday to exchange a snowboard. Her beaten and burned body was found in Rio Rancho over the weekend.

I think that its funny you say that, smoking pot never got anyone killed (bad deals have but not smoking pot) and I personally know all parties involved and pot did not get Brittni killed. It was more of a personal thing between her and Ryan, I have seen them together a couple of times. I dont think we will ever really be able to know exactly everything that happened or why. She was a nice girl and may she rest in peace.

A Bernalillo County grand jury has indicted Christopher Midyette on charges of tampering with evidence and conspiracy to tamper with evidence.

Police say Midyette and Ryan Vigil murdered CNM student Brittni Carlini with a baseball bat a few weeks ago, then put her in a hole on the mesa in Rio Rancho and burned her body.

Vigil told police Midyette actually killed Carlini, but Vigil committed suicide in jail.

After that, the murder case against Midyette fell apart. The district attorney's office says there just wasn't enough evidence that directly implicated Midyette in Carlini's murder.

Midyette is being held on a $100,000 bond.

This guy, whose bond was lowered--may not have hand a physical hand in the murder but

if the guy witnessed the crime and was incapable of saying anything
the only crime this released suspect is guilty of is

Destiny, a quick word: he had no Physical hand in the murder nor was he there when the murder was commited, he wasnt there helping with any part in this. There is no evidence and he has been released to his family. He has to check in daily and is on an ankle bracelet. I know this man, he is a close personal friend. He didnt enable Ryan to think that killing Brittni was justified because he had no part in it. Nor did Ryan need anyone to make hime feel justified in taking a womans life he had that all by himself.
