Ed DeLaney was apparently beaten over his involvement in a closed adult bookstore
State Rep. Ed DeLaney was lured to the meeting with Augustus Mendenhall under the premise that the latter man wanted to buy some land. But that was just a ruse. Mendenhall, a newly minted lawyer, had a beef with DeLaney going back 26 years. And he intended to end it Saturday morning.

More than two decades ago, Mendenhall's father wanted to open an adult bookstore in Indianapolis. The county prosecutor ordered it closed. The matter would wind its way through court over the next six years, with torturous financial results for the Mendenhall family. DeLaney's wife Ann was an assistant prosecutor in the case, and Ed DeLaney may have been involved as well...

The case reportedly ruined the Mendenhalls and the family was never the same, says Augustus. So he decided to take revenge Saturday morning.

According to police, Mendenhall -- wearing a big red wig -- first tried to shoot DeLaney as they sat in DeLaney's car. But the gun jammed. Then a couple who knew the Indianapolis Democrat recognized his car and stopped by to chat. DeLaney casually chatted with them, but all the while he was winking and covertly flipping them off. Since this was unusual behavior for the gentlemanly pol, they called 911 as they drove away.

When police arrived, Mendenhall was on top of Delaney, beating the hell of him. He had to be subdued by a stun gun.

DeLaney was hospitalized with multiple injuries, including broken facial bones and broken ribs. Mendenhall was arrested with a loaded handgun. Though he only passed the bar a year ago, we're guessing his vaunted legal career is already over.
