Jason David Cloutier, World's Dumbest Hunter, Shoots Students After Mistaking Them for Deer

• A Ferrum man will serve a 12-month jail sentence for the death of a Ferrum College student, who was shot on Nov. 17, 2009. Jason David Cloutier, 32, pleaded no contest Monday in Franklin County Circuit Court to charges of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Jessica Goode of Winchester, trespassing, carrying a concealed weapon and recklessly using of a firearm. Through a plea agreement with the commonwealth's attorney's office, Cloutier was sentenced to five years in prison on the manslaughter charge with all of the sentence suspended. Cloutier was also sentenced to 12 months in jail on the trespassing charge and 12 months in jail on the concealed weapon charge with all the time on each charge suspended. Cloutier will, however, serve 12 months in jail on the reckless use of a firearm charge. The plea agreement also calls for Cloutier to speak at courses in firearms safety through the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries after he serves the 12-month jail sentence.

• radium, are you out of your cocksucking mind? The dumbshit had a scope and he's still couldn't tell it wasn't a deer he was aiming at? You're a bigger dumbshit than he is apparently.

• It's unbelievable that someone could be this trigger happy that they could kill another person. Take time and wait a couple seconds to evaluate the situation. A single deer is not worth the risk. Obviously, this knucklehead couldn't have cared less.

• A dumb hunter? Hardly. More like a crack shot, hunting deer is incredibly hard. But Jason committed no crime with malicious intent. It's hunting season in heavily wooded Ferrum & the Christian college students are forewarned. And no nonsense of hunting deer, they were hunting frogs for biology. The hunter had to be a helluva distance away to strike with a high-powered rifle and fired only one shot with the bullet passing through. The "private property" is added on bunk because how would Jason know; The land was bought years ago but never developed. There are hundreds of hunters in season right now, it's permitted. An unfortunate incident but Jason is no murderer.

• Gee, what does the NRA say about this? Guns don't kill people. Dumb ass hunters who can't see kill people. So not only do we need to do a background check but we should have their fuckin' eyes examined too!!

• First of all, I do not believe that it is appropriate for a comedic approach to be taken when reporting on a story where one person tragically lost their life and another was severely injured. Secondly, I believe that the rest of the individuals who have posted comments to this story are forgetting the fact that a beautiful young vibrant woman who had the rest of her life ahead of her lost her life due to something so totally senseless and irresponsible. It digusts me that people would find a way to use a situation like this for comedic banter or use it as a comparison on the humanity of livestock slaughter houses. Thirdly, when discussing something you should at least get your facts straight. There was one shot fired. The bullet traveled both through her chest and his hand. I had the pleasure of growing up and being good childhood friends with this young woman and it is dishartening to know that there are individuals who would be dumb enough to show their ignorance and insensivity to the her grieving family and friends in a manner such as this.

• @bobbie: Automatic weapons are banned from use for hunting - meaning unless he was unlawfully using one, than it's one pull one shot. Now you can make a case for not hunting with high powered rifles in certain areas. Bullets from them can traverse long distances and hit targets that the user did not intend to. Also, even though optic technology is stronger, not every hunter may be using it and things can appear to be very different than what they actually are at a long distance - even in an open area. I'm not saying that happened in this case - clearly this hunter could have done any number of things differently and had a much better outcome. I'm not even going to bother with your "unmanly sadism" concept.

• Maybe if those kids were packing heat they could have fought back. ARM EVERYBODY EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!

• This idiot should be banned. This isnt typical of hunters. This guy is a moron. He should never see taste freedom again

• Do you eat meat bobbi? Do you wear leather in your belt or shoes? If so, then you are a hypocrite. Educate yourself on slaughterhouse practices and how they treat the source of your meat and leather. A bullet to the heart by a skilled hunter is much, much more humane than the modern livestock slaughtering methods.

• Hunting should be banned and all automatics. This yearly unmanly sadism is just a barbaric ritual from days of yore.

• On which basis did you conclude he evolved from apes... My theory is he's deevolved from apes. How can he be so stupid, I mean at first he had to take aim. If by then he doesn't realise they are humans he should have heard their screams and yellings saying "omg are you hurt" - (we all know people say something like that in those situations). And they where totaly unobstructed too. What realy bothers me is he shot at least three times.
