UPDATE: A hunter talks a dad into surrendering after he brutally raped his girlfriend and kidnapped their daughter.
With all the mayhem and depravity we usually cover around here, it's nice to finally get a story with a happy ending.
| After an hourlong talk, a hunter convinced Gary Traynham to surrender |
He as going to go hunting that day, and as he walked into the woods near Milton, New Hampshire, he recognized Traynham's truck. But instead of panicking, he decided to approach Traynham man-to-man.
"I walked up to him and told him that I knew he was the gentleman they were looking for," Grant told WMUR-TV. "(I) pretty much told him he had one of two choices: He could turn himself in or I could turn him in."
Traynham had parked in the woods because he was out of gas and had no money. The two talked for nearly an hour as Grant tried to convince him to surrender.
"I just told him to be a man and own up to what he did and let the little girl go home where she belongs," Grant said. "He treated me with respect ... he didn't give me a confrontation. So why should I give him one?"
Grant convinced Traynham to take a ride to his friend's house, where they would call police. It seems his man talk had broken down the fugitive. "The whole time, he was crying and holding his daughter," says Grant.
Fortunately, Hailey was unhurt and played with a little girl in the home while they waited for police. "He seemed like a normal guy," says Grant. "He knew he had done wrong, (but he) just didn't know how to handle it or how to turn himself in."
