Heather Barrett Faked Brain Cancer to Raise Money for... Heather Barrett

​The donation cans at businesses around central New York told of a 33-year-old mom with two children who'd been diagnosed with a brain tumor. She was being treated in Massachusetts, said the message, and the medical and transportation costs had brought on a crushing debt...

"Her family is dealing with crippling medical and transportation expenses and would greatly appreciate any and all donations you would so lovingly give," read the note on the cans. "Thank you in advance, The Barrett Family." 

Then police received a tip that Barrett indeed had problems with her head; they just weren't of the cancerous variety. Detectives discovered she didn't have a tumor, but she did have a problem with scamming broke New Yorkers into giving charitably at Christmas.

She's now been charged with misdemeanor fraud and a felonious inability to think up scams that aren't so easily unveiled.
