Debbie Miller's Rat-in-Food Extortion Plot was a Little Short on Savvy

On most episodes of The Savvy Criminal, we celebrate those who bring a little cunning and professionalism to the illicit arts. But today's spotlight shines on a woman who wouldn't know savvy if it bit her on the face...

Money's a little hard to come by in northern Wisconsin, so in 2008, 43-year-old Debbie Miller decided to pull Ye Olde Rat in My Food Scam at The Seasons restaurant. She put a dead lab rat in her lunch, pretended it came from the restaurant's kitchen, then told the owners she wanted $500,000 for her troubles, otherwise she would alert the media.

But the owners wisely informed their insurance company instead. And insurers, as we all know, are in the business of taking your money, not paying claims. After a little digging, the insurance company detective first discovered that the rat was domesticated, not the wild kind commonly found hanging around restaurant kitchens.

The investigator also discovered that the rat had been microwaved -- and The Seasons didn't have a microwave on its premises.

All of which convinced Debbie Miller that she probably wouldn't be seeing her $500,000 anytime soon. So she's now pleaded no contest to felony extortion and obstructing police. She'll be sentenced in March, where she'll hopefully be sent some place where she can get expert tutelage on how to properly run an extortion plot.

In the last episode of The Savvy Criminal: Caught on Tape: Casino Robbery Nets Gunmen $100,000 in Just 2 Minutes.
