But his ire apparently reached its apex one day when the Tooles' 6-month-old shepherd mix got free. Witnesses say he savagely beat the puppy with his fists and a rock. The dog suffered multiple skull fractures, a broken jaw and smashed teeth. The injuries were so severe that a vet decided it needed to be put down.
Johnson tried to claim it was self-defense. He said the dog attacked him and he feared for his life. But witnesses only saw an unprovoked attack, and that Johnson seemed to fly into a rage for no reason.
A jury found him guilty of animal cruelty and using a deadly weapon -- the rock -- in the beating. The 55-year-old retiree now faces up to four years in prison.
