John Farren, Former Bush White House Counsel, Tries to Beat Wife Mary to Death
Friday, Jan. 8 2010 @ 9:32AM
UPDATE: Mary Farren says her husband beat her while he was serving as an attorney for President Bush in the White House. She's still hospitalized with a broken jaw, facial fractures, and lacerations, and says she fears for her life. See update after the jump...
Mary Farren tried to deliver divorce papers to her husband John Farren, the former deputy White House counsel to President George W. Bush. But hubby didn't want a divorce, and her urged his wife to reconsider. She was afraid of his temper and refused.
So Farren tackled her in a bedroom at their New Canaan, Connecticut home and ripped out a clump of her hair. Then he beat her with a metal flashlight until Mary lost consciousness. When she woke up, he was still pounding away.
 |
| Mary Farren was beaten and strangled by her husband in front of their children at their Connecticut home |
He began to strangle her as she was again losing consciousness. Despite barely being able to see, she managed to trigger the home's alarm system.
Farren started beating her again and threatened to slit his wrists. He grabbed a large knife and went to the bathroom, coaxing his wife to follow. But Mary instead ran to her daughter's bedroom yelling "Daddy's trying to kill me!" according to a police report.
Mary managed to escape with her 7-year-old daughter and the couple's baby. She fled in a BMW before stopping at a home to call police.
Farren is the former general counsel at Xerox and once served as undersecretary for international trade under George Bush the Elder. He also worked as George H.W. Bush's deputy campaign manager in 1992 before being named to George W. Bush's White House legal team in 2007.
But despite being a bigshot lawyer, he seems unaware that not even bigshot political appointees get to kill their wives -- especially in front of their children. Though the Bush administration's constant yammering on "family values" always seemed loaded with hypocrisy, this is taking that hypocrisy much too far.
Farren is now being held on $2 million bail for strangulation and attempted murder.
Mary, a bigshot lawyer herself at the Skadden, Arps firm in Washington, D.C., is in stable condition at the hospital with a broken nose, broken jaw and other injuries.

UPDATE: From her hospital bed, Mary Farren says she fears for her life.
She told police that she's fearful her husband, if released, will try to kill her and possibly their 7-year-old and 4-month-old daughters too. "She adamantly wanted the police and court to know that he has an explosive and uncontrollable temper and he will kill her," according to the police report.
Farren's now being held in jail on a suicide watch. His bail has been set at $2 million. Police believe he may have attempted suicide after brutally attacking his wife. He showed scarring on his neck that seemed to match his belt.
Mary says this wasn't the first time her husband attacked her. She says he also beat her three years ago, about the time he became deputy White House counsel to President Bush.
The creep shouldn't have any trouble making bail. The house he beat his wife in is 4,300-square-feet and valued at $4.8 million.
Sad situation, I am glad the women survived this ordeal; maybe she can be a voice for Domestic Violence, since society want to think that the educated and elite people do not behave in this type of behavior.
Domestic Violence can happen to anyone regardless of there social economic background.
Posted 01/07/2010 at 09:45:50 PMHmm, so not so long ago a bunch of rightwing readers saw that some suckbag who was strongarming schoolmates into sex with him was at an Obama event and that was of course a clear sign to them that Obama is the anti-Christ.
All because the guy had on a t shirt and was at an event.
So, where are those same rightwingers now -- here's a guy who was not some anonymous face at an event, but a highranking, handpicked official. Looks like this guy took his cue from his boss -- he tried to do the same thing to his wife that Bush and the republicans almost did to the country.
We're waiting for you to make the same connection, guys ....

Posted 01/08/2010 at 11:05:58 AMHa, I agree Larry, I really got tired of the Obama/Child Predator thing. In all honesty, criminals are going to be criminals no matter who they vote for. Glad to see a story about a messed up Republican.
Posted 01/08/2010 at 11:36:19 AMYou guys crack me up . This has nothing to do with republican or democrat. This guy is plain crazy. But if you want to talk about criminals and which party they belong to, go to your state prison, most of them will be democrats. Moron!
Posted 01/08/2010 at 11:48:00 AM4 month old child with this monster 2 Republican idiots
There very well may be more democrats in state prisons, but amoung ELECTED PUBLICALLY PAID EMPLOYEES of our gov't that are in prison or facing charges, Republicans win THAT particular race.
Posted 01/08/2010 at 04:18:15 PMSo if one of your employees, that has no record of beating his wife and gives you no reason to suspect he's beating his wife, ends up beating his wife, then it's a reflection on you and your company?
Posted 01/08/2010 at 06:15:41 PMJackie:
"But if you want to talk about criminals and which party they belong to, go to your state prison, most of them will be democrats. Moron!"
Now, do you think that's because Democrats tend to be criminals, or because we disproportionately imprison black people, who tend to be Democrats?

It's the sheer number of hypocritical politicians and appointees that reflects on the "company." If Republicans didn't spend all their time yammering about family values, they wouldn't get mocked so much when caught with their pants down, behaving in ways they publicly denounced.
Now in this case, Democrats publicly denounce wife-beating, too. But they don't regularly turn around and try to stomp their supposedly-loved ones into the ground for being disobedient, since Democrats also tend to be for equal rights.
Posted 01/08/2010 at 06:22:57 PMDCath, not, it is not a reflection of your company, but on this story http://www.truecrimereport.com/2009/12/anthony_r_stancl_used_facebook.php
Posted 01/08/2010 at 06:28:41 PMpeople were saying that just because a regular person (voter, not part of the Government) supported Obama and he was luring children, then all Democrats were horrible. Just read the comments. In essence, Larry was just trying to see what all of those people would say about this since some think a voter can represent a whole party, why wouldn't a party official represent that party? I was curious as to their defense too.
Who is taking bets on whether this "Jackie" character was one of the people was one of the losers who tied that gay bully to Obama because he had on an Obama t shirt? But now that someone who Bush himself chose for high position tries to murder his wife with their babies in the vicinity, "it's not about republican or democrat.". LOL
Some other guy asked what the fact that he was an employee had to do with his employer had to do with his employer. Well, what does some guy wearing a t shirt have to do with the guy on the t shirt?
Hey Jackie, guess what political party the kings of wall street belong to? You know, the guys who got rich on crazy risky transactions that ruined the economy and put millions out of work, then made the taxpayers foot the bill because their thieving companies were "too big to fail.". Moron? That would be any person of modest means who supports the party of the rich predators.

I'm talking about the 'article', if that's what you can call this, not Larrys comment.
The person who wrote this is obviously just a partisan hack, and couldn't wait to use a tragedy and this woman's personal nightmare to take yet another jab at the Bush administration and 'family values'.
I hope you all realize this is a real woman who went through a real horrible ordeal, and that she is not just a 'point' to put in your 'lol republicans are hypocritical' column.

Yeah, glad to see a woman got beaten so you can laugh at a Republican. Hope you feel good about yourself.

YEAH! Because, you know, the right-wingers or Fox would NEVER do that with a families personal issues!! Right?.....oh, wait...........

"YEAH! Because, you know, the right-wingers or Fox would NEVER do that with a families personal issues!! Right?.....oh, wait.........."
So you're admitting that this is no better than a Fox News article then?

Of course we're horrified by what happened to that poor woman, and hope the bastard who did it rots in jail. But that shouldn't blind us to the fact that the Republican party seems to produce a lot of do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do types and violent misogynists who preach about "family values."

A guy wearing a t-shirt doesn't have anything to do with anything.
But you people are saying this mans political party had everything to do with the fact that he beat his wife.
You're no better than the people in those comments.
Posted 01/08/2010 at 07:55:28 PMJust stumbled onto your website and it looks promising. Hwever, in the first paragraphs I've read here there is the all too-typical lefty name calling-slur slinging crap, Some tiresome slop about the Bush hypocrisy yeah yeah. Have you the simple erudition required to refrain from boorishness? I confess to doubt, as I sense I still must issue a disclaimer: No, I am not a Republican.
Posted 01/08/2010 at 09:35:35 PMYet another reason to ban gay marriage...I'm a republican. It does not have to make sense.
Posted 01/09/2010 at 03:41:49 AMNow your just getting desperate.
Posted 01/09/2010 at 03:55:03 AMI hope to god this lady recovers. That man is obviously emotionally and mentally unstable, and I couldn't be happier he's behind bars. Now, if only a 2 million dollar bail was enough to keep him in. (Maybe no one will for sorry for him and bail him out, they don't let you bail yourself out from prison, not here anyway.)
I also hope that the cops listen to her pleas and decide that he isn't sane enough to let out incase he tries to finish what he started.
I'm happily a democrat, I have high hopes for Obama and couldn't be happier that our country has came as far as elected an african american as president (that really makes me proud of our nation), but I don't believe that his politcal party has anything to do with this. Nor do I feel that it gives the republican party a bad name. Concerned Citizen and Larry were just saying exactly what I thought as I was reading this. Every story that people can relate in any obsured way to Obama they do and attack him and the Democratic party, they were just saying, they wonder what those people have to say about this. You guys are the ones cracking us up, you took that comment and made a big political debate about it... you didn't surprise us.
Posted 01/09/2010 at 11:17:28 AMDCath, give me a break. I have never said that I didn't sympathize with the victim. I feel bad for her. The up side to this story is that she survived. That isn't always the case in these articles. And yes they are articles. What else would you call them?
Posted 01/09/2010 at 06:19:50 PMSure this matters politically - if this guy was abusive while he was the #2 lawyer in the White House, he should have been removed from his position for something less stressful. That may have prevented this unfortunate episode.
Many don't realize what Farren's department was involved in. His boss made unprecedented claims that White House lawyers (just like him) should get never-ending, everlasting immunity from subpoenas. This changed the way executive privilege worked in the past, saying the President's advisors have special protection from criminal investigations, unlike average Americans.
Much more here: http://bit.ly/663TTK
Posted 01/10/2010 at 10:11:36 PMDOMESTIC ABUSE DOES HAPPEN IN ALL SOCIAL LEVELS IN LIFE. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS WHEN YOU LIVE IN A $150K HOME INSTEAD IF A $4.7 MILLION HOME THEY ONLY CHARGE YOUR HUSBAND WITH ASSAULT AND BATTERY AND LEAVE OUT THE FACT THAT HE INTERFERED WITH A 911 CALL BY UNPLUGGING THE PHONE OUTSIDE THE HOUSE BEFORE HE DID IT AND DONT EVEN OFFER TO TAKE PICTURES OR PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION (a.k.a. ambulance) OR ASSISTANCE. INSTEAD THEY HARASS THE VICTIM (the wife and me) AND TAKE HIM TO THE SHERIFF's OFFICE ONLY AFTER THE VICTIM ASKS WHY THEY ARE NOT ARRESTING THE HUSBAND FOR LIFTING HER UP AND HEADBUTTING HER ONLY 2 HOURS AFTER SHE HAD ASKED FOR A PROTECTION ORDER FROM THE SAME OFFICERS AND THAY HAD DENIED HER SAYING THERE WAS NO THREAT AND ASKING HER IF SHE WAS A GOLD DIGGER. THEY 'ARRESTED' THE HUSBAND BUT THEY NEVER EVEN PUT HIM BEHIND BARS AND CERTAINLY DID NOT CHARGE THE HUSBAND WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER - ONLY ASSAULT AND BATTERY. OH, AND THEY GAVE HIM BACK HIS GUNS UNDER A PROTECTIVE ORDER AS WELL 2 DAYS LATER NOT TO MENTION THAT THE PROSECUTOR IN THE CASE WAS THE HUSBAND's BROTHERS ATTORNEY AS WELL - ALL THIS IN DINWIDDIE VIRGINIA. THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE AS IN EVERYTHING. PEOPLE ARE STILL CRAZY BUT $$$$$ TALKS. THAT IS WHY I AM STILL TRYING TO GET HELP IN MY CASE. HE EVEN ASSAULTED ME UNDER ADVISEMENT AND NEIGHBORS WITNESSED IT AND HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ARRESTED IMMEDIATLEY ACCORDING TO VA CODE BUT SMALL TOWN UNDER THE TABLE IT IS NOT WHAT YOU KNOW BUT WHO YOU KNOW AND COUNTY OFFICIALS THAT COVER THE COUNTY OFFICIALS BACKS DONT WANT TO COOPERATE UNTIL I GET SOME MEDIA ON THIS!! ANY IDEAS???
Posted 01/11/2010 at 11:05:55 AMstarboardmermaid,
There lies the problem. I am an unfortunate resident of VA as well and this must be the most ass backwards state I have ever seen. I am surprised that women are allowed to own cars and houses in this state.
To all the people who said jail is full of democrats, I doubt most people in jail have taken the time to apply for a voter registration and vote or read the paper. Why do you think they keep committing these crimes. They apparently are unaware of the new DNA testing and most of the laws.
I'm not surprised he worked for Bush. Bush is quite the violence-loving dude.
Posted 01/11/2010 at 05:08:41 PMJoeShmoe, I have been doing a little research and in the last 40 years more Republican Officials have been found guilty and sentenced of serious crimes than democrats.
