Despite a recent backslide, Michael's recovery has been remarkable, according to his doctors
In October, 15-year-old Michael Brewer was surrounded by five of his supposed friends, doused with rubbing alcohol and set on fire in a beef over a $40 video game. Doctors didn't know if he'd live. But just before Christmas, he was released from the hospital.

Now he's back at Holtz Children's Hospital in Miami, readmitted Sunday and said to be in serious condition.

Neither the hospital or his family has said what caused the relapse, though he's reportedly having troubles breathing. But after receiving burns over two-thirds of his body, it could be anything. We'll keep you posted.

UPDATE: In a police interview, Michael recalls the events leading up to that tragic day he was set on fire.

Michael doesn't remember everything about the October 12 attack, but he does have a fair recollection of the events leading up to it. He says Matthew Bent wanted him to buy a video game -- he believes it was the Little Mermaid. Bent wanted $40, but Michael didn't want the game nor did he ever take it. He thought it was stolen.

Bent apparently wanted his money anyway.

The day before the attack, Bent followed Michael home and demanded his money. Michael refused, so Bent tried to steal his dad's bicycle. Family members ordered him off their property. About 15 minutes later, her returned with Denver Colorado Jarvis, also 15.

Michael's mom Valerie said the two stood outside the house taunting Michael's dad, trying to get him to come outside and fight. "Bring out your punk ass out here!" he yelled. "I have something for you. Come out and fight me now.''

Why Michael's dad didn't beat his ass seven ways to Tuesday, we don't know. But the Brewers called 911 and the punk was arrested.

Bent was released from jail the next day. Michael was afraid of getting jumped so he skipped school. Later that afternoon, he went to a Deerfield, Florida apartment building to see a friend. That's where he was surrounded by Bent and four other boys.

Denver Jarvis poured rubbing alcohol on him. Jesus Mendez quickly set him on fire. Michael jumped into the apartment pool to douse the flames.

All he can remember is not wanting to get out of the pool, "Because my skin was, like, hanging.''

UPDATE II: Some tried to break into Michael Brewer's home, and it appears the family is being harassed.

Malissa Durkee, Michael's sister, called 911 Monday to say someone had cut through a small window and reached inside the home at 3 a.m. But all she saw was a hand reaching in.

Two days before, someone stole cash from a stroller on the front lawn, then chucked it across the street. They also ripped a work permit off the front of the house that was needed for some repairs being done.

In November, Malissa found two burned dolls floating in her family's swimming pool.

None of this looks like the work of professional thieves, so our only guess is that it's some dickhead who gets off on scaring an already scarred family, or more likely: friends of the accused attackers practicing a chickenshit brand of intimidation. We're guessing the latter.

Police are stepping up patrols in the area.
