Last week, Nick Rizzuto was standing next to his Mercedes on a suburban Montreal street when a man walked up and shot him several times in broad daylight. This might be just one of many murders in a large city. But the dead man was the son of Vito Rizzuto, the city's incarcerated mob boss...

He's also the grandson of Mafia powerhouse Nicolo Rizutto.

Nick Rizutto, 42, was gunned down near the offices of Mafia-related construction business. So far, speculation ranges from an inside job to the first shot in a war with Haitian street gangs.

The Montreal Mafia is in a weakened state due to the imprisonment of many of its leaders. Nick's father, chieftain Vito Rizzuto, is currently doing time in Colorado for racketeering involving three murders. The Rizzutos are said to be aligned with New York's Bonanno Family.

The shooting could have been an inside job to take out the heir apparent. Or it could have been a charge by the Haitians, who've battled the Rizzutos in the past. But thus far, it doesn't appear the Rizzutos have responded in kind.

"Traditionally, if there is no obvious sign of retaliation or revenge, it's a sign that [the hit] was sanctioned inside," Julian Sher, an investigative reporter who covers organized crime, told the Globe and Mail. "It could also mean, if it was done from outside, that the ones who did it are just too powerful and no one is going to go up against them. Sometimes, not responding sends as powerful a signal as responding."
