In honor of our debut installment of What Wouldn't Jesus Do? -- a weekly tribute to men of God behaving badly -- we bring you the case of part time pastor, part time truck driver Daniel Keith Gabbard, who was recently convicted of wanton murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison...

Cincinnati Pastor Daniel Gabbard killed a man after drinking 16 beers while driving his semi-truck
On June 8, Gabbard had the bright idea to jump in his semi-truck along with a case full of beer. As he drove south from his home in Cincinnati toward the Kentucky border, Gabbard downed nearly 16 beers in just a few hours.

Gabbard made it about 300 miles when he crossed an intersection in Pendleton County, Kentucky and smashed into a car, killing the driver instantly. And it wasn't just any driver behind the wheel, either. It was Pendleton County prosecutor Doug Wright.

Surely, Wright's coworkers weren't going to go easy on Gabbard for killing their friend. And they didn't. They charged Gabbard with everything from a DUI to wanton murder -- the highest possible charge in a deadly drunk driving case. When police checked his blood alcohol level, he was at .18. The legal limit for truck drivers is .04.

Gabbard might have hoped that his preacher status might save him from the 20-50 years that came with such hefty charges. But it didn't. Prosecutors made the salient point that any man -- especially one who makes a living off of touting morality and decency -- must be aware of the fact that drinking WHILE driving is a downright dumb idea. They also pointed to the fact that Gabbard had, in fact, done this sort of thing before.

Even Gabbard admitted in court that he knew what he was doing was wrong. Maybe he was hoping he could just sort things out with Jesus later?

Regardless of his ins with the man upstairs, here on Earth -- where regret is not a proper penance for killing a man -- a jury found Gabbard guilty of wanton murder. On Thursday, he was also sentenced to 20 years in prison, of which he must serve 17 years until he is eligible for parole.
