Shoplifter Dorina Williams Dies During Fight with Walmart Security; Family Says She was Choked
UPDATE: Court records show Dorina Williams had dozens of previous arrests before her duker with Wal-Mart security that day. In fact, it appears Williams was a chronic criminal with an addiction to shoplifting and a willingness to fight when caught...![]()
Walmart's everyday low prices -- and even lower wages and benefits -- don't always attract the finest people, either employees or shoppers. That combination turned deadly at a store in Conway, South Carolina, when security caught a woman shoplifting.![]()
Walmarts lowe prices and even lower wages make it a breeding ground for America's weirdest retail crimes
"Asset protection employees" -- apparently corporate-speak for "security guards" -- caught 41-year-old Dorina Williams shoplifting. So they followed her to the parking lot where they got into a fight. What happened next depends upon who's doing the telling.
According to workers, Williams, a mother of eight, collapsed during the struggle and was later pronounced dead at a hospital. A coroner ruled she'd died of natural causes, though final test results are still a few months away.
But Williams' family tells a different story. 16-year-old daughter Myiesha Williams says her mom offered to show the guard her bag, but instead the guy choked her. "She said, 'Hold on, I'll give you my bag,' and he just started choking her," Myiesha told WMBF-TV. "He wouldn't let her go. I told them, 'She can't breathe, she can't breathe,' and they wouldn't listen. They wouldn't."![]()
Family members say Walmart security choked Dorina Williams when she was stopped for shoplifting
Williams' niece Lakeisha adds that her aunt has asthma. But when Williams asked for her inhaler, the guard took it from her. .
"She asked me for an inhaler and I gave it to her, and the man took it from me," she said.
Police are only saying that they've charged a juvenile with shoplifting and assault and battery. But there apparently were numerous witnesses to the incident, and someone supposedly caught the incident on camera. Store security cameras should also provide more evidence.
The only thing we know for sure is that the employees will likely be fired, as is the company's practice. See Walmart Greeter Ed Bauman Fired for Defending Himself After Getting Punched by Customer.
UPDATE: Reader "Tja68" tipped us off to this info about Dorina Williams, which indicates she's not exactly the sympathetic victim her relatives are playing her to be.
According to South Carolina police, the mother of 8 has been hit with 26 charges since 1994. Two were for resisting arrest, suggesting she's not the kind to go quietly into the night when confronted with her wrongdoing. She's also been charged multiple times for shoplifting.
Moreover, she's twice done time in a state program designed to halt career criminals. Though we're still waiting for surveillance tape showing what happened in the parking lot, our guess is that Williams' family will have a tough time painting her as a victim when they inevitably sue.
