The 50-year-old science teacher was arrested on January 12 for fondling a 9-year-old boy at his home last summer.
The charges came just one week after Lewis was caught driving drunk to work, thus swiftly locking up the school's "Degenerate of the Month" honors for January.
According to a police affidavit describing the summer incident, Lewis touched the boy's naked privates and forced him to do the same. Lewis then rubbed himself against the boy while both were pantsless. He is also accused of offering the boy alcohol.
The affidavit refers to the boy as a "family friend" who is not a student at Causey. Lewis admitted to touching him but called the contact unintentional.
He is charged with sex abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and is on paid leave.
School leaders responded to the news with shock, which was matched by disbelief from parents who say they've been complaining about the teacher for years.
One family claims their 11-year-old son got an unwanted eyeful when Lewis wore an astronaut suit in class last year. The teacher stepped into a classroom closet to change out of the suit -- another of his "unique instructional methods" -- when the boy saw him naked.
While the allegations would be a setback for educators in civilized regions, analysts believe Lewis's Teacher of the Year title is safe due to Alabama's statewide lack of competition.
