Danish Minhas was the senior class president who was applying for an internship with the Houston Police Department. Nur Mohamed was Lee High School's resident dope dealer. They made an unlikely couple when Minhas approached him in Spanish class...

The proposition was simple: Though by all accounts Tabassum Khan was a doting mother who gave her son a 2007 Camry and enough money for daily Starbucks trips, Minhas still thought her rules were too tight. He wanted mom dead. And he was willing to pay Mohamed to kill her.

Mohamed balked at first. So Minhas laid on a tale of her inherent evil. Mom was abusive, he said. She wasn't his real mother. And she had put a hit on his real parents. They were all lies, but Mohamed didn't know any better.

He agreed to kill the woman for $4,000.

Minhas drove Mohamed to his Houston apartment on November 24 to make sure mom was home. He claimed he'd forgotten a notebook, then made sure to leave the door unlocked as he left.

Mohamed entered after his departure. He overpowered the 43-year-old woman, stabbing her 48 times. But in the frenzy he stabbed his own thumb. He also left his fingerprints on the doorknob.

Minhas drove him to a friend's house, where Kevin Haney awaited them. Mohamed was cut bad enough that they called 911, telling the paramedics he'd cut himself carving a Thanksgiving turkey.

Minhas made an initial downpayment of $1,000. Haney got a $500 cut for helping with the injury.

Mohamed and Haney then went to the mall, buying a $200 bong and dining at the Cheesecake Factory.

Minhas, who had an internship interview with the police department that day, decided he wasn't cut out for crime fighting after all. So he took a girl on a date to the movies.

He didn't return home until the next day, hoping that someone else would find his mother's body first. No luck. It also proved unlucky that detectives were suspicious. Why would a 17-year-old boy be out all night, especially on the night his mother was killed?

But police wouldn't get their break until January, when Mohamed was busted for carrying dope at school. One of his first requests was to ask to speak to Minhas.

When he was processed, Mohamed's fingerprints matched up with those found at the crime scene. Mohamed confessed. So did Haney.

Minhas would initially admit to the crime, but would later recant that confession. Both Minhas and Mohamed face capital murder charges.
