To be awarded a spot on our weekly Fugitive Watch, you can't be just any old sucker running from the law. Take, for example, this week's person of interest: Benito Vargas, a notorious human trafficker who is now hiding in Mexico after one of his slaves was discovered by police...

For several years, 23-year-old Vargas has been dealing in the currency that is young, desperate girls. And, apparently, the young entrepreneur turned it into a real family business.

Vargas found his most recent victim in Jalisco, Mexico. On October 27, 2009, he met a 16-year-old girl whom he convinced to come with him to his home in San Juan, California with the promise of a better life.

Upon arriving in the US, however, the girl realized that that was the furthest thing from the truth. Not only did Vargas repeatedly beat and rape her, but she was also used by his mother and sister as a slave.

Each morning, the girl was forced to wake up at 5 a.m., bathe three children, and walk them to a nearby school, among other chores, including preparing breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the entire family.

Between her chores, the girl was repeatedly assaulted by Vargas's relatives, both sexually and physically. The girl claims that when she tried to defend herself, they threatened to kill her or turn her into authorities for being the US illegally.

By December, the family was through with her and kicked her out. With no where to go, the girl sat on the curb in front of the house for two days without food. At night, she'd sneak back onto the property and sleep on an old couch in the front yard.

Finally, police found the girl. Vargas's mother was quickly arrested for failing to report the abuse. His sister, who was already in custody on unrelated charges, has been charged with assault.

But Vargas is nowhere to be found. Police suspect that Vargas, who is now wanted on aggravated sexual assault of a child charges, is hiding out in Mexico or along the US/Mexico border.

Anyone with information is being asked to call the San Juan Crime Stoppers line at 956-283-TIPS.

Vargas isn't the only fugitive we have our eye on. See last week's story on Robert Besabe, who was recently convicted of killing a pregnant woman after 25 years on the run.
