Montoya knew Besabe. He had dated her friend -- now a passenger in her car -- for a year before recently breaking up. And apparently Besabe wasn't too pleased by the end of their love affair.
After offering Besabe a ride, he got in the car and asked Montoya to stop at an intersection in a quiet part of town. As he got out of the car, he drew a pistol and shot Montoya, only 24-years-old, in the head. He then pointed the pistol at his ex-girlfriend and fired, blowing away a chunk of her hair, but missing her head. Then he ran.
While Montoya began slipping into a coma, she also went into labor. She eventually gave birth to a baby boy later named "Jose" by her family. But the child didn't have much of a chance. Born ten weeks premature, he died in the hospital just two days later. Montoya, who lingered in a coma for a month, eventually followed him.
As for Besabe? Well, police never figured out his whereabouts until much, much later.
After the shooting, it turns out that Besabe fled Washington for California, where he began living under the name "Bobby Sanchez." He also started a family. By all appearances, his life was quiet and quaint, until 1996, when he followed his girlfriend's lover onto a freeway, forced him to pull over, and then shot him dead on the side of the road.
This time, Besabe only sort of got away with murder. After his arrest, he claimed that he was acting in self-defense. He pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. His true identity still remained a mystery to authorities.
When he was finally released in 2006, for reasons that remain unclear, Besabe was deported to his native Philippines. It seemed that he would never be brought to justice for the murder of Montoya and her child. Now in the Philippines, he was far out of reach of US authorities. But, thankfully, most murderous criminals aren't that smart -- including Besabe.
In September 2007, Besabe walked into the US Embassy in Manila and applied for a new US passport -- get this -- under his real name. As soon as the authorities had his application in hand, they discovered that Besabe was on the FBI's 25 Top Most Wanted list for the 1982 murder. He was quickly arrested and extradited to Guam before being sent back to Washington.
On Friday, Besabe, now 55-years-old, was finally convicted of murder. He was also sentenced to 77 years in prison.

I am always pleased when they are as dumb as they are cold-blooded.
