After retiring, he returned home to Pennsylvania, where he used his fame to get elected as a Luzerne County commissioner. Aside from campaigning as a former football star, the massive Skrepenak -- who stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 325 pounds -- also campaigned as a reformer.
| The former star lineman spent six years in the NFL before returning home to campaign as a "reformer." |
He's pleaded guilty to taking $5,000 in gifts to help a developer seek public financing for a condo project.
So far, 23 officials in Luzerne County have been charged with various corruption schemes. It's gotten so bad that New Jersey is considering annexing he county under the constitution's rarely used "shared values" clause.
Among the arrested are a school superintendent, three judges, and five school board members. In one case, two judges were charged with taking $2.8 million in kickbacks in exchange for sentencing juvenile offenders to a for-profit detention facility.
Though the county still has a ways to go before it can surpass corruption powers like Cleveland, Chicago, Detroit and New Orleans, handicappers in Vegas believe it has a chance at a wild card game if it can get a few dog wardens indicted before the season ends.
