Those signs reading "HIGH VOLTAGE" should have been their first clue, but Guy Harlan and his unknown accomplices couldn't resist all that copper waiting to be stolen at a Atascosa County, Texas electrical substation...

So they cut through the fence and proceeded to strip the station of its copper in the small hours of the morning. Detectives believe they may have been there for as long as two hours before residents heard a boom, saw a flash, and then found their electricity out.

When an employee of the electric co-op arrived, he found the fence cut open. Also awaiting him was Harlan, 44, who'd been electrocuted with 69,000 volts. What the morons didn't know is that with that kind of voltage, you don't have to touch grounded wiring to get jolted. As one employee said, it reaches out to you.

Investigators say the thieves got away with $20,000 worth of copper. Two other substations where also hit that night. But due to criminal rules of etiquette, Harlan's accomplices didn't stick around to assist their fallen comrade. Police have made no other arrests in the case.
