• This really turned into a tedious, if not warranted, debate on age of consent laws which really obscured the true nature of the incident. Namely, a teacher (in this instance female) had inappropriate sexual relations with one or more students (in this case male). As a resident of the town this occurred in, I can attest to the fact that (based on reliable hearsay, but hearsay nonetheless until entered into public record) at least one of the individuals was 18. However, even in this her actions were morally and perhaps legally reprehensible. As pointed out before, there is a clearly demarkated line based on a code of ethics which all educators must adhere to: conduct of this nature even with a consenting student is inappropriate. It is grounds for immediate termination if need be, especially for an individual without tenure, and perhaps legal charges or civil lawsuit. She violated one of the most important boundaries that exists in education, at least since pederastic practices were deemed detrimental to all parties involved. It would not matter if she engaged with only individuals, male or female over 18 years of age, if they are students at her school (and depending on law at any other), she has still comitted an unpardonable sin against the institution of education. Acts by her and others not only have rammifications for the teachers, students, schools, districts involved but for the establishment of education on the whole. The frequency of his predation is alarming, and each time it happens the authority and respectability of the teaching profession suffers. As a male educator myself, my colleagues and I have to remain increasingly mindful of situations and scenarios. Now stundents and teachers cannot meet in private for one-on-one conferences for fear of being misconstrued. Often times we have to have a third party present, which in some instances is beneficial and in others makes it more difficult to get to the bottom of an academic or behavioral issue as students are automatically on the defensive. That is just one example of the negative consequences to these actions. In the last few years alone in this district, there have been as many as five reportings of teacher misconduct which have been proven false, all attributable to student vindictiveness. Each time teachers were placed on suspension, damaging their reputation, and one causing such a scandal the teacher could not return to the position after being proved innocent in court. For all of you "Why didn't this happen in my high school?" gentlemen, be glad it didn't otherwise the state of education in this country might be far worse than it already is. What with creationist efforts tolimiting the teaching of scientific fact, fundamentalists advocating for abstinence-only sex ed, and conservatives attempting to insert revisionist history into widely-used textbooks.

• I am in favor of complete abstinence until marriage. Our society has done a terrible thing by separating the sex act from its intended result. If I think about it, I am sure there were oppurtunities for various members of my high school faculty to take advantage of me or my siblings (male and female). I do not claim to read minds but I think it is safe to say that none of said faculty members even thought about it. This dicussion itself relects a very sad reality. Oh, and not all men are perverts. Some are upstanding members of society, loyal to their wives, spend quality time with their children, etc.

Again, I think the onus is on people like you to do something about it if you feel that strongly. Because personally, I think it's totally reasonable to create a legal stipulation around this at least up to 16, and I believe that 18 year olds being prosecuted for having sex with 17 year olds or having to register as sex offenders is the rare fluke exception to the rule. I think one can be purist and say if there is even one case of someone being prosecuted, that's too many, but typically when people bitch about statutory rape laws, it sounds more like a defense for them wanting to have sex with minors than it is arguing the rare cases the laws are applied to relationships most would agree (including a judge who could choose to dismiss the case) are more acceptable .

That's when people got married right out of high school. Hell, my grandfather is 8 years older than my grandmother, but her family took him in and let him live with them until my grandmother turned 18 and they got married. It was a different time. We live in a time in this country where we're given more time to grow up and experience things. That means not infringing upon one's childhood by taking advantage of them sexually when you're an adult. There are reasons behind why it's not okay. Only a sick mind can overlook them and try to say we shouldn't have these rules.

However, there seems to be a broad spectrum (and you hint at it yourself) of more acceptable sexual engagements that are outside of the realm of legality that do no harm and are unjustly illegal. What percentage of statutory rape cases are successfully prosecuted and how many of those fall outside of what you would call acceptable? I'd say few to none. I'd wager that the vast majority of statutory rape cases are those involving individuals that you would consider acceptable by the simple fact that most minors won't find individuals outside a certain age range attractive and therefore won't consent to sex with the individual and then if sex does occur the case would be tried as actual rape. And those that do are probably low to mid twenties. The minors that do it are going to do it anyway and the adults that do it probably don't know and are being lied to or will do it anyway. There isn't really anyway to enforcement and by swinging such a large net you're catching a lot more dolphin than tuna. If both parties are sexually mature and making a consensual decision, where is the harm done? Sex isn't evil, it is good and it's fun. Better yet, the older the partner is, the more likely they will be responsible and wear a rubber, use birth control or use "breakfast in bed". But this may not be up your alley because your argument is all emotion and no objectivity. People hate gays because it is "just wrong". There's a reason they say that - it's because that's what people say when they have no objective reason to stand behind their situation, they've just grown accustomed to feeling that way. And no, it isn't the same as NAMBLA because they think it shouldn't matter what the age is, be it 16 or 5 and actually do focus on pre-pubescent boys. And yea if you like pre-pubescent children you are far beyond the line. I'm saying that sexual maturity is the determining factor, which is, strangely enough, the same time minors start having sex with one another and young adults regardless of what the laws are.

But I do have similar views to you J but I think the laws as they currently are produce far more harm then good. I really don't think that 10 year olds are sexually mature or should be having sex, nor should 12 or 13 year olds ... probably. But any age limit is essentially arbitrary. If you have to choose one though, it should probably be lower than 18 because in my observation there are far too many cases in that so-called grey area and there are far more that happen anyway but never get prosecuted anyway.

Your point is well-taken though, it would be difficult to determine legality of such a situation if it occurred. I think that situation though would probably be in the vast minority being that there are relatively few men attracted to 10 year old girls and very few 10 year old girls that would consent to sex. For the outliers I think there could be some type of guideline for meeting "sexual maturity" that a ten year old would be highly unlikely to pass.

You know I actually knew a girl in high school who there were rumors about had been with a married teacher. She wasn't particularly attractive or popular and no one paid much attention to it. In college, I actually ended up going to study abroad for a year and weirdly enough she was on the trip and the teacher, now her husband, accompanied her in the program. I think the teacher was mid-late 20s at the time, which put the couple at like a 7 - 10 year range likely. This took place in the suburbs of a major US city, so not some country-bumpkin cousin-fucking state. The older man and underage woman is definitely more prevalent but is probably kept a lot quieter for various reasons not the least of which are scenarios like the above. "People send their children to learn, not to get screwed by their teachers." I think he learned plenty.

Roger: I don't see pregnancy as the sole issue regarding where age of consent should be set for teens. A teenage boy confronting the reality that he conceived a child is as unsavory to me as the teenage girl discovering she is pregnant. Pedophiles are extremely rare, while people who think teens are sexy are pretty much common as dirt. So she may certainly be a criminal, but there's no indication that she's a pedophile.
