Reader: Why are We So Outraged by Teacher-Student Relationships?

"No, I don't see a problem with it as long as it was consensual (and that means absent of coercion). I'm not advocating breaking the law here, I'm just talking about the moral outrage - I don't see the justification for it.
"These boundaries we place on children are arbitrary and in my opinion more for the parents benefit than the benefit of the young adults. You know I actually knew a girl in high school who there were rumors about had been with a married teacher. She wasn't particularly attractive or popular and no one paid much attention to it.
"In college, I actually ended up going to study abroad for a year and weirdly enough she was on the trip and the teacher, now her husband, accompanied her in the program. I think the teacher was mid-late 20s at the time, which put the couple at like a 7 - 10 year range likely.
"This took place in the suburbs of a major US city, so not some country-bumpkin cousin-fucking state. The older man and underage woman is definitely more prevalent but is probably kept a lot quieter for various reasons not the least of which are scenarios like the above. "People send their children to learn, not to get screwed by their teachers." I think he learned plenty."
