Scott Bass, Andrea Bass Kept Daughter Locked in a Room for Months for Stealing Food

• IF YOU KNOW SO DAMN MUCH ABOUT ME , MY DAUGHTERS AND OUR LIVES WHY ARE YOU ANONYMOUS?  YOU DONT KNOW A DAMN THING.

• I was homeschooled for two years, because the schools were making a joke of my education.  My parents never beat me or locked me away.  I was encouraged to have friends over and go over to their homes as well. I was very involved in volunteer work.   I also had a job and babysat for other families.  And to your comment about my intelligence-  I am in medical school, studying to become a pediatrician. I was accepted into a dual degree program to become both a doctor and an attorney, which I hope to use as a tool to become an advocate for abused children. Be careful of your stereotyping, Mr. Ignatowski.  I am not saying that these things don't happen, nor am I condoning the horrible actions of these parents, but there are many loving families who homeschool their children.

• "Failure to report neglect of a minor"...seriously? Like they were really gonna report to authorities that they were sadistic pieces of shit that tortured and imprisoned their daughter?

• Let me start by saying that I know both of these people personally. And the step mom is not to blame. Unfortunately, both parents get thrown into this situation when a demanding father has full control. The mother had little power as she was acting in fear, just as the daughter was in fear. The mother and daughter were not allowed to communicate as the father was the one disciplining her. The 14 year old already suffered with a father and the original mother for 11 years before finding someone more loving like her step mom. But, such situations are difficult and scary, and no one is capable to judge unless they've undergone such circumstances. We hear a lot of parental abuse and domestic violence and women are always the weaker ones.

• I am for homeschooling in some cases. On the other hand, someone once mentioned sending your kids to a super elite school could be a mistake. Once your kid gets out into the workforce. They are going to have to deal with all sorts of people. If they are in public school, then they have already been around these people. Then it'll just be DDSS.

• Just to shed a little more light on the subject: I actually knew the people (not well, obviously - our young kids were in sports together) involved in this case. This article makes the step-mother out to be just as bad as the father (biological, mind you!!!) and that simply isn't the case. I didn't know how to bring it up to anyone, but it was obvious, at least to me and my friend, that the step-mother was being controlled and abused (at least mentally and emotionally) by her husband. She displayed all of the classic signs of battered-woman syndrome in how she acted toward/reacted to her husband. There had been multiple CPS run-ins in the past and he had managed to get them all swept under the rug. And while he explains his actions all as part of his "religion" he was most certainly not Christians, at least not by the Biblical definition of it. Please, don't just keep referring to the "wicked-step-mother" when it was her FLESH-AND-BLOOD father who was doing the majority of the damage. A side note: One of the previous investigations was as a result of an attempted exorcism in another state. How did these people still have their five children? Oh, and one more thing, where was this poor girl's biological mother?

• Dead: Spoke with a plumber on the toilet/bucket and running water issue. House could have had some kind of a external (to the bathroom) cut-off valve (other than the typical valves located under the sink and toilet) to control water into the bathroom. I can only imagine that there was another bathroom in the house for the rest of them to use while they imprisoned the girl in that torture chamber of a bathroom.

• To Dead: Although this is a sad, sad story, I, too, found it quizzical about the toilet/bucket phenomenon. I'm glad you said it first, though. It sounds trivial, but any critical thinker would wonder?...

• If I were in your situation, I would have had to hid also. It's very hard for me to keep my mouth shut, even if I know deep down that I can't do anything about it. People that are abusive to children or people that they see as "weak" just make me irate. However, sometimes there is absolutely nothing that we can do. I sure hope your old roommate has began to cope with these issues and has learned that the behavior is not normal.

• I think that's a valid point, however, it makes me think back to a former friend/roommate I had back in Florida. She was raised primarily by her grandmother, who also cared for foster children and her mentally-disabled adult son. She was abusive to everyone. She would shock all the kids with cow-prods, make them tread water for hours on end, make them stand on their heads until they passed out; and to put icing on the cake, she would punish her mentally-disabled son by shocking him with the cow-prod and/or tying a rubber band very tightly around his testicles (all this while she basically treated him as a slave, because she herself was in a wheelchair). Despite all this, my friend remained close to her grandmother until the day she died. I don't really talk to her so much anymore, but I noticed she always gravitated towards people who treated her like shit. The more they put her through, the more she wanted to be with them. One time when we were sharing a house together, her grandmother came to visit and I had to lock myself in my bedroom because I knew there was no way I could hold back if I saw her, especially knowing that she was continuing to abuse her son, who was almost 40 by that time. It's just odd how some people aren't satisfied unless everyone around them is living in fear, and then there are some who focus on maybe the weaker of bunch. I'm wondering if maybe in this particular case, the other children were the biological children of the step-mother and likely younger, especially if they never had a chance to tell anyone what was going on, or were even aware that what was going on was wrong.

• mcr, I am by no means an expert in this, but I have a theory on your question. Since we all agree that this is probably a control issue, I think that once the parents are able to control at least one of the kids, that their desire to control the others decreases. Having ultimate power over one person probably outweighs having a little power over many or several. In other words, I think they just choose one because if all of them were under the complete control, they would have a higher chance of rebellion or the children turning against them.

• Something this article didn't mention is that there were four other children in the home, similar to the Ines case, that showed no signs of abuse. I wonder what it is that makes these parents single out just one child?

• Hi Jaden!! Sometimes, one just needs a break from all this crap, kwim? And those two words ALWAYS piss me off...."stealing food." It's definitely a control issue. Everything about that child's home life was about control for the stepmother. And the dad's a loser for allowing it to go on.

• When I was 19, I rescued a 13 year old from the local reservoir in mid February in Iowa.. he was staying in a pup tent, had 1 blanket, his clothes, a canteen, and fishing gear. He had been kicked out by his aunt for eating a bologna sandwich, apparently they counted the slices before putting them in the fridge. See, her excuse was the lunch meat was for her husband. She had custody of the kids after their mother had been murdered by her husband 5 years before. I had him for over a month before anyone came looking, and it was only because CPS was doing a home visit that she reported him as a runaway. Of course the cops came after me, but couldn't prove anything since his brother had warned him at school and he took all his stuff and hid out while the cops were there. Even after talking to him, me, and the kid that sent me to the reservoir, CPS left him with that garbage.

• That is incredible I cant really understand how a father and a mother can do such things at the expenses of their own daughter. I hope they get a few years in prison.

• We all have our own reasons for homeschooling, but sadly, some people obviously have dark agendas. I pray that this girl can get the help she needs to deal with all this and that she be placed with a loving family or relatives. You can't diss a whole system based on the crimes of a few. I am neither an abuser, nor a Christian. I want my children to have strong moral values as they grow up, then let them into the world as leaders, not sheep.

• True that a lot of religious fundamentalists (often Christian) do home school their children to shield them from the outside, but I've know many people who were home schooled for entirely different reasons. Living in a crummy school district, having a special needs child, or apparently hiding abuse are a few

• To the person who said the memories of her torture would last a lifetime, you are correct. She can get counseling and possibly learn coping skills, and in time she might even be able to forgive, but she will never forget. I know this because I was beaten regularly for "stealing" food. This happened in a foster home, where the state had placed me after removing me from my own abusive mother. My foster mother would put food--carefully measured or counted--in places where I would find it. Often it was cookies in a canister. Each evening she would count the cookies and if one was missing all hell broke loose. I often left the food alone but I was always so HUNGRY that it was hard for me to do. This was 50 year ago and I have not forgotten any of the details.

• Home school is code for Christian. Christians are pretty open that they believe it is their right to abuse their own children. An entire church has even have been known to come out to regular street protests for the right to hit their children. I hope even the Christians who protest for the right to cause pain to their children will think these two "parents" went too far, though.

• &#64;Jim Ignatowski... For every one of these homeschooled freakshows in the news I can cite dozens of homeschooled college students I teach daily who pass easily for what you call 'normal'. Yeah, the abusive psychos call it 'homeschooling' to have an excuse to keep the kid locked up, but when was there actually any schooling going on in these cases? Bottom line is that legitimately homeschooled students are by and large more intelligent and capable than most - a generalization held up by statistics that you might want to check out. Homeschoolers do better at standardized tests, college courses, and AP courses than their public schooled counterparts. In my junior-grade Advanced Data Structures class I have a kid who has a 34 ACT and a 4.0 GPA on a CS/Math double major. He's typical for this demographic. As for social adjustment (your 'normality') there is as wide a range in homeschoolers as found in public school. There are some who party and have more friends than they can keep. There are some who barely say a word in class. Most are inbetween. In reality your comment is ignorant and short-sighted, possibly even malicious - are you bitter since you're 'fenceposts' are continually outperforming you and your children?

• Instead of Mr and Mrs Bass, they should be called Mr and Mrs BASS-TARD!!! These idiots should be punished to the fullest and I pray that poor child will find a way to put this behind her, although the memory will probably last a lifetime.

• Homeschooled... Why do these always seem to involved "homeschooled" kids? I'm guessing because homeschooling is a convenient way to lock kids away from society so they don't know what normal is or can't tell others what their parents do. I can't think of a single parent I know who "homeschooled" their kids that didn't cite keeping them "safe" from society as the reason for barring them from attending a real school with normal kids. Most of which seem to be about as intelligent as a fencepost.

• Absolutely awful to see stories like this. Read up from another article that there are 4 other children in this household, and I can only imagine what kinds of psychological and physical abuse they went/are going through as well. Also something to think about is all these children grow up to be adults and parents too one day...

• This just breaks my heart. What hurts more is knowing that there are so many more children being subjected to this type of imprisonment all over the world! I grew up in a home with a very overbearing stepmother. She controlled everything that went on in our home and one of the rules that frustrated me as a kid the most was that every piece of food was someone's, someone meaning her, but thank God even with all the garbage that my sisters and I put up with it never came to the type of thing that this poor child was put through! As a wife and mother that has been one of my most stringent rules, if food is brought into the house, anyone in the house, my children in particular are welcome to it! These two "parents" had issues that went way beyond food control though, IMO, they are sadists and probably enjoyed every minute of torture they put this child through! God bless her and I hope and pray she can come out of this healthy and whole!

• Hey Soobs, haven't seen you around in a while! It's all a control thing for these freaks. My sister married a man that beat my nephew for "eating his cereal". I was like WTF? Your cereal? If it's in the family home, it belongs to the family. I don't care if it was your money that bought it or not. Chances are real strong it was my money not his that bought the food anyway! Needless to say, I have nothing else to do with my sister or her loser husband. But it wasn't over this minor infraction, it was over somethings much more serious in nature. But, it boils down to control. Sick, twisted, demented control. They should put these parents away for a long time...long enough they get couseling to become normal...however long that takes!

• Soobs, you're right. This is all too common. Unless the child is overweight, I don't see the issue with the child grabbing some snacks when he/she is hungry. Especially at 14. I would think at a 14 year old definitely knows when they are needing an extra nibble. I really think the "stealing food" thing is just an excuse for these sadistic parents to act out on their fantasies of having complete control over another person, in these cases, their children. It's very sad. I'm so glad this girl had the nerve to leave and get help.
