When Carina Schlesinger was last in the news, she and her dog had fought off a rapist in Central Park
She said she hadn't, but she was acting strangely.
Worried when he still hadn't shown up by the next night, Jonathan and friend Scott Broschart went to Carina's house in Holmdel, New Jersey. They smelled gas and saw a candle in the window. Then they saw flames, followed by a loud boom.
Lawyer Daniel Cresci was found shot to death in his girlfriend's burning home
This would be the second time Schlesinger made the news, though last time she was painted as hero rather than victim.
In 2004, someone tried to rape her in New York's Central Park. A man grabbed her by the hair as she was walking her dog and attempted to force her into sex. But Schlesinger fought back, as did the dog.
Blood from the dog's bites led detectives to the assailant, Tito Rodriguez, who was later sentenced to 125 years in prison.
UPDATE: Carina Schlesinger faced mounting debts in the days before she shot her boyfriend, then set fire to her house and killed herself.
She was going through a divorce and a bank had foreclosed on the Long Island home she owned with her husband. She'd been accused of assaulting Holmdel cops.
The former trophy wife had sold off $162,000 in jewels to pay her mounting debts
These are just a few of the woes Schlesinger was laboring under prior to her death. Friends and family of Daniel Cresci say she was becoming increasingly unstable.
Though she'd opened her own dog training business in 2008 -- see its website here -- she had only a year of experience in the field, despite claiming 12 years on her website. She'd also been sued by her former partner, Sheldon Leibowitz, who claimed that Schlesinger learned the trade from him, only to open a rival business.
Meanwhile, she was suing another company, Network Teks, for failing to provide contact information when the company built her website. It was a beef that was growing increasingly hostile.
All this was compounded by mounting debt. Daniel, who was serving as her lawyer, listed 22 items from her trophy wife days that she'd sold on eBay in the last year. There was a Tiffany diamond bracelet for $16,500. A $17,000 watch. A $5,000 sapphire ring.
All had been sold at steep discounts to pay bills, Daniel wrote in court papers. But if anything, the sales showed how far her life had fallen. Even at discounts, they still totaled out to $162,000.
Police aren't yet sure when she killed Daniel. But he was likely dead inside her home for days before she set the house on fire and took her own life.
