Carmela Khury Gets Jail Time for Bringing Her Kids to Jury Duty

She found out the night before that her mother was scheduled for oral surgery the next day. Other relatives had to work, so she was left without a sitter. She called the judges chambers the next morning saying she would have to bring her two kids to court.
A clerk told her she had to show, but she couldn't bring her kids.
But Carmela wasn't about to leave her kids with just anyone. When she arrived 20 minutes late -- with her children -- Judge Leo Bowman (pictured above) called her into court.
He didn't much care for her excuse and ordered herto observe the rest of the trial, then do 24 hours in jail for contempt when the case was over. Can you say "Judge Dickhead," boys and girls?
"I don't feel he was in the right," Carmela told the Daily Tribune. "I think this judge in particular has forgotten that the power he has is on loan from the people. It's our vote that puts him there... I was crushed. My head went down, I started crying. I didn't know what he wanted me to do."
But the Michigan Supreme Court has now ruled that Bowman had no authority to sentence her to watch the trial. He could have excused her from the jury or forced her to sit on the panel. But he couldn't make her watch the trial.
It's the second time Bowman abused his power. In a previous case, a college student wanted off a jury, saying he had an important exam coming up. So Bowman sentenced him to watch the case from the spectator's gallery, then write a 5-page report on the trial.
The Supreme Court has ordered him to stop the practice.
