• Guy tries to still someones car. That someone comes out, catches him. They scuffle. Pansy thief bites Marine (um, probably not a good idea!) and the Marine accidently kills him. I'm not really seeing anything wrong here. He was protecting what was his. True, maybe he shouldn't have left it running, but who hasn't? That doesn't mean that the bad guys have the right to come steal your stuff! If they would just leave our stuff alone and actually go out and work for their own stuff, they probably wouldn't be in this kind of position. I think it was just an accident. Maybe he was just stronger than he thought he was, but that doesn't mean he meant to kill him. And even if the thief didn't know the car belonged to a Marine (by the way, who in the heck messes with a Marine?! That's just insane!), the fact remains, the car wasn't his. It could have been some cracked out drug dealer with a gun. You just never know what's gonna happen! So, had he not tried to steal the car, he might still be alive! Mcr, you would probably get my vote too! Ryan, I think I have said it before, but THANK YOU for serving! I hold the majority of service men and women in the highest regards! I'm looking for that book about the Marine who was in Iraq or Afghanistan and the dog followed him around and he eventually brought him to the states, but I can't remember what it is! My daughter would love that book! She loves animals and she always waves at men and women in uniform! Anyone remember what its called? Its a children's book, but I can't find it anywhere!

Protecting one's livelihood is self defense, and no, he did not use excessive force as you never know if the person has a gun or knife, the man who tried to steal his car put his own life in someone else's hands when he did what he did. the Marine did the right thing.

• It's amazing to me that anyone with any common sense would try to defend this thief in any way. He has no rights when he is committing a crime, he lost that the minute he decided to be a thief. 10 to 1 says he's not even a US citizen. Gosh people WAKE UP!!!!! If you had a modicum of critical reading skill you would understand that "we shouldn't promote violence to solve problems" does not imply the perp was a victim.

Are the attorneys who file them generally in business very long? Try a little google on Orly Taitz or ALJ drycleaners in DC. Two prime examples of idiots who filed stupid lawsuits. Orly is in business for a few more weeks and the ALJ (name escapes me) in the DC drycleaner suit is out of business.

A well armed society is a polite society. Maybe if we locked people up for life for rape and murder, we would have less rape and murder. if we let go of the fairy tale of rehabilitation, and understand only long term incarceration is the answer we could have lower crime rates. California has some of the lowest crime rates since the 50's, and why? Because of the 3 strike laws. Now that the economy is bad, and the legislature and governor have't laid anyone off since the 70's we are going to release prisoners, guess what that will do to the crime rate. A small percentage of people commit all the crimes. keep the locked up, and surprise, less crime.

I would argue that the person who causes the death is the person using such force as it can be lethal, whether or not he/she can be held accountable is another story. Besides in many states it is illegal to leave a running car unattended, e.g. Texas. We have too many idiots promoting and "justifying" violence at the slightest provocation in this country.

Like I said the move the marine used is the same move any police officer would have used to control and or incapcitate and end the fight without hurting the person sometimes the person can however struggle and cause their own death by crushing their own trachea.

• This "hero" should be in jail, or at the very least sued to the ground. He's the moron who left his car running, deserves to have it stolen. Just because he's a veteran he gets a pass at killing someone over a car? He gives a bad image to every other returning vet, that they can't control themselves and will kill over everything.

• Oorah! Get some! Lesson learned and the family that tries to sue him should have to do it in a court on base with Marines. He put the guy in a blood choke commonly taught to all people for use in self-defense if the assailent tries to struggle they will inevitably kill thmeselves as the move is designed to incapacitate them but is dangerously close to the trachea if they struggle they crush their own wind pipe if they don't they pass out from lack of blood to the brain and then promptly wake up some 5 to 30 seconds later in a state of complete dissorientation. The Marine in question used proper escalation of force had the thief gotten free of the choke he would have resorted to hand to hand combat and then you all would be talking about true excessive use of force at that point Marines get really nasty.
