Rather than laugh at the desperation of this woman intelligent people should stop and think about what kind of country we have created that this can even happen in. This is the result of stingy Republican policies; anti-abortion dogma which even the poorest and most incapable of raising children buy-in-to; and a declining job market and economy that has a trillion dollars of bailout for Wall Street but nothing for women who are compelled their sell their bodies for next to nothing. Dont' laugh, a woman you know may be in that very predicament. She may be your daughter who knows how cheap and stingy you and your ilk are.

• i think ultimately this is a human rights issue. despite being a prisoner, he is a human who needs medical attention. imagine the example we'd be setting if the State decides to execute someone who was once a citizen, and then sends him to his death in a sickly state i realize that what i'm saying doesn't jive too well with the logical progression of events here, but alas, these decisions need to be scrutinized at on a fundamental level: one's right to be healthy (not to mention one's right to be alive...), especially when that person's life will be cut short due to a State action. in my opinion it can't really be summed up with "well, he's going to die anyway, right?" personal note-- as an opponent of the capital punishment doctrine (and a law student), i'm all for having the prisoner have his life extended.
