At the time, Rev. Jonathan Ayers seemed like the consummate Christian. He had offered Kala Jones Barrett a ride back in Toccoa, Georgia. He dropped her off that September day, then drove to a gas station to use the ATM. What he didn't know was that police were following him...

Barrett, you see, was a suspected coke dealer. So police followed Ayers, believing he too might be involved in the ring.

When Ayers left the gas station, undercover cops jumped from an unmarked truck and pulled their weapons on the preacher. But Ayers apparently believed he was being robbed, so he backed toward the cops. They opened fire.

Ayers managed to drive away but soon crashed. He was later declared dead at the hospital.

At the time, Barrett claimed the preacher was merely a good Samaritan who occasionally helped and ministered to her. During the subsequent investigation, however, police discovered the married father-to-be had been carrying on a relationship with Barrett since 2005, unbeknownst to his wife or parishioners. He called her 20 times the day he died.

Police later acquitted the undercovers in any wrongdoing, ruling that it was all a tragic accident.

But Ayers' widow Abigail Ayers doesn't want that to be the final word. She's filed a federal suit against police, claiming wrongful death, assault and battery, false arrest and mental and physical pain. We'll keep you posted.
