Then she heard gunshots. The girl's 13-year-old stepsister, Na'Jhae Parker, and her 13-month-old sister, Nakyiah Jael Chapman, were also dead. Dad emerged from the room to tell the little girl if she told anyone of the murders, he'd kill the 10-year-old and her 2-year-old brother as well.
So the girl went to school for two weeks without telling a soul.
Then Nateesha Chapman's uncle called police and asked for a welfare check on his niece, since he hadn't heard from her in two weeks. He'd stopped by to visit her four times, but each time Kenneth Chapman gave him a different excuse why she wasn't home. He knew the couple had argued before, so he became worried.
When police arrived at the Charlotte, North Carolina apartment, Kenneth Chapman sent the two remaining kids outside, then went upstairs.
He began shooting at police from the top of the stairs. When the gunfire ceased, Chapman was dead, apparently having killed himself. Officers then found the bodies of two other children in the bedroom. Mother Nateesha was found dead in an apartment the family vacated a few weeks earlier.
Police still don't have a motive for the slayings. But the surviving kids are now safe with family members.
