Melvin Johnson III Gets 60 Years for Possession of a Gram of Crack

Bedtime Reading from the Village Voice Empire: Melvin Johnson has the misfortune of living in Texas, where he was arrested for possessing a mere 1.3 grams of crack -- roughly half the weight of a dime. But Matagorda County thought that was worth 60 years in the slam.
Houston Press has the story.
Oh man now this is ridiculous! Back to my point about overcrowding in prisons!
Posted 03/11/2010 at 08:35:34 PMIn my opinion drugs are stupid if a person wants to take them, do it at your own risk. Pot should be legalized so the criminal activity can some what be cut down, tax the shit out of it and put a percent of the sales into the economy. The guy should get in some type of trouble for having crack; But 60 years in prison? The tax payers will pay around 20,000.00 a year just for his housing not to mention medical, education this is B/S if you ask me. No mean comments please.
Posted 03/12/2010 at 03:57:56 AMTexas is ridiculous! when it comes to their laws, way overboard
Before jumping to the conclusion that this sentence was too extreme, did he have a history of selling crack? Did he have an extensive criminal background? A lot of places have a 3 strikes law for repeated offenders. Just because he was caught with a "smaller" amount of crack this time does not mean he hadn't been caught with larger amounts before, that he hadn't had a much larger amount before they searched or that he hadn't been dealing that poison to others. I'm all for the legalization of marijuana as it's completely natural and has many benefits to it example; medical use, can be used to create natural fuels, clothing and much more. I do draw the line at crack and other hardcore drugs. Why? Easy, dealers who sell cocaine/crack want to make a profit so they add harmful chemicals into their "product" to stretch the quantity. So pardon me if I'd rather see crack dealers off the streets so they can't keep selling their poisons.
Bottom line, we don't know all the facts as to why this man got 60 years. We don't know that he didn't deserve that type of sentence. I'm going to just hope that this is a case where a habitual offender is being put away to where he can't possibly hurt himself or others with crack cocaine.
Posted 03/12/2010 at 08:15:01 AMOh come on! Sixty years for 1.3g of crack?! Jeez, our legal system is rotten to the core. If someone wants to do drugs, that's their business. The government needs to stop forcing morals through laws and let us be free. Sure, crack is bad for you, but if that's what you want to do, do it.
Posted 03/12/2010 at 12:40:59 PMJust a thought,
Posted 03/13/2010 at 01:58:10 AMI do not care how many strikes he had against him. When a person gets caught with 1.3 grams of crack and gets 60 years in jail, but parents refuse antibiotics that could have saved their sons life, and they get 16 months, this world if fucked up!!! Granted, drugs are bad, blah blah blah. I also believe we should legalize pot, tax the hell out of it, and get some money into the system. I now plenty of people who smoke pot, and honestly feel it's less harmful then cigarettes and alcohol.
Anyways, glad I don't live in TX and have to pay for this douche bag to live for the next 60 years. RIDICULOUS!!!!
What the fuck to bad they don't do that to all crack heads and ho
