As long as people have had to fight for their suposedly unalienable rights within our lifetime in this country, we are not quite there yet. Conservatives are infamous for trying to shame people, but look at your role models. How many Republicans are losing their jobs over homosexual behavior this month? No need to even go back through all the Mark Foley type of behavior in your supposedly superior party - we all know how frequently they are in the news. Incidentally, I have kept an open mind about socialized medicine for the last 20 years, until I have finally come to the conclusion that it isn't the best thing for America and will never be done fairly to make it worthwhile to the greater good. However, in terms of social reform, no president has done more of the types of things I agreed with politically than Clinton. No coincidence that his presidency marked the first time a subsequent president has been left with a budget surplus for several decades that I am aware of. The Iran-Contra thing was a perfect example of Republican corruption going unchecked and unprosecuted. There are so many similar examples of lack of ethics and integrity throughout Bush Jr. and Reagan's tenure, but people are always trying to scrub history of all the stains on their record i.e. Fox News personifying Reagan when he died like some universally loved grandpa figure. I will even say I didn't hate having Bush Sr. as a president anywhere near as much as those other two. But to uphold the things Cheney, Rove, Bush, and Rumsfeld have done in the spirit of "desparate times call for desparate measures" is pure madness. To turn around and be instantly ready to attack the new president a year into his first term rather than retroactively hold the former administration accountable for their misdeeds is pure hypocrisy.

• Seems to me the problem isn't Dem or Repub..it's US. We can't seem to get past the party lines to really discuss these issues. We play the blame game back and forth, pass the buck, and avert responsibility. If we cut all the party propaganda on both sides and had a sit down with regular folks from both sides, I have a feeling you'd see we agree on 98% of the issues and the remaining 2% assumably has no place in government period, regardless of party support. I have also heard a very good argument that college should be free. I don't believe that. college vocational training once outside of highschool should be free. Not everyone is college material. At least not initially. The net worth of the vocational school & college bootstrap should be very close to the same. The argument is straight forward. You'll earn more so you will pay more taxes. You also are less likely to be a "ward" (welfare) of the state. Bush: The last year of Bush's administration saw many Republicans turn against him for the debt. No hypocracy there. I don't blame the war either. Wars can be forced upon you. When they are they must be fought or you must surrender. During a war taxes could be & probably will be higher than 20%. This bad paper affected the timing of recession and & how bad it would be. The credit markets FROZE up becaase of CRA. Then McCain said he was clueless. Two months earlier Barney Frank and Dodd look like they were going to be hung. You could see it on their faces during newscasts. they thought the public would come after them. • Guys, the "Tea Party" has been around for a long time: it is the ideological culmination of PorkBusters, which got its start in the mid-00's, long before Obama decided to run. These folks, together with the core of what would become the Tea Party movement, protested (in letters and phone calls to Congress) against GWB's TARP bailout. How do I know? Because I was one of those people who wrote letters and made phone calls (not that it did much good...). The Tea Party didn't just materialize out of nothing simply because Obama came into office. It grew in numbers, and spilled onto street protests around the nation, because letters and phone calls weren't having an effect. It grew in numbers because the array of objectionable policies (TARP, Stimulus, ObamaCare) seemed to expand with each passing day. It has everything to do with Obama's policies, and nothing to do with race; give it up already. FYI: The term "teabagger" was originally used to denigrate Tea Party protesters by CNN's Anderson Cooper (who later apologized for it). It has since come to be expected when left-of-center commentators discuss anything related to the Tea Party. For the record, I am a young Latino, an American citizen by choice, and a Tea Party member. I've seen Blacks and Latinos at Tea Party protests in Texas, Virginia, and DC. Don't let Olbermann feed you a line of bull: we're in the movement, even if you refuse to see us.

• I don't know, Larry, I think J and Gaggy make a good point. The Tea Party guys never protested when Bush ran up massive debts. They only showed up after we elected a black guy, which is a little suspicious. Plus, they claim Reagan as their patron saint, and he ran up record debts in his time. At the very at least, it's intellectually dishonest. I hear you about medical costs. My own doctor brought his mother down from Toronto for her surgery. But there's a huge difference in Canadian medicine and what Congress has proposed, which could best be described as Reform Lite -- protecting a load of special interests on both sides. There's gotta be a sensible solution in the vast between, yes? Last I read, the top 8 health insurers saw 50+ percent increases in profits last year, and some people are seeing their premiums go up 30-40 percent. That's well beyond the cost of medical inflation. It seems to me that there's something better between bad medicine and being utterly gouged by our own countrymen. Especially when we're already doing de facto cost shifting, since you and me are picking up the tab for all the uninsured every time we go to a hospital. But the only thing I'm hearing from conservatives is "socialism" and "no." It seems in all their rage against government, they've become perhaps unwitting agents in blockading their own interests.

• Socialized medicine has led to cost shifting. Some more people need help as costs go up. It a progressive failure like flooding in a ship. Your out in 2 years 7 most likely can find a job. Once you have that you get the 4 year degree & keep going. It is so fucking surprising that we need foreigners for programmers, when in the recent past state govt(s) would hire people with as little as 15 to 20 hours of programming. As few as 5 classes in programming taking no more than 1 year in school. With night school maybe a person could pend 1/2 year in night school & 1 semester full time. we're talking about $500 to $1,000 in tuition. Of course after you get the job you keep going to school. either OJT or night school. However, I never saw many people in the easy programming classes. So don't tell me about the poor.
