Nelson McAlpine isn't a big fan of stealth when it comes to his burglaries. He decided to break into the home of 89-year-old Beatrice Turner in Des Moines, Iowa at 5:30 a.m. And just so everyone would hear within a 100-mile radius, he decided to bash in the door...

Beatrice Turner, armed and fabulous, may not have very good aim, but she did send the bad guy running
Everyone did hear, in fact. Neighbors called the cops. And as McAlpine punched and kicked the door, Beatrice got her gun.

McAlpine beat a hole through the door and entered. But that's when he was confronted by the armed granny, who pulled the trigger.

"The next thing I knew, he was in here," Beatrice told KCCI-TV. "Right there. And that's when I grabbed my gun and I stood right there in my bedroom door with my gun and I said I'm going to kill you! I was trying to hit him in the head, but I guess my bullet missed him. But if it had cocked him again, I'd have got him. I must not have been a dang good shot, because I must have missed him!"

Alas, Beatrice did miss our dimwitted burglar. But he'd made so much noise that police were already there when he fled the house.

"The Lord was with me," says Beatrice. "I never got scared. "This is a .22. And the police reloaded it for me. I know how to work that gun. I just hope and pray to God it don't happen again."
