Carl Walker, 11, Also Committed Suicide When Teachers Did Nothing About Bullying

• The school failed that boy, period.    Unbelievable.

• Like Chopper Read from that Australian show says, these kids need to "harden the fuck up." Seriously, kids, stop killing yourselves. It's really dumb, and it only causes your parents a lot of heartache.

• What most people don't realize is that in most cases, especially in smaller towns, the bullying may take place outside of school, after school. I was TORMENTED DAILY as a young teenager by others in my neighborhood. I often felt that I "could not go on" and "wanted to die". Came close to acting on it too, but the thing is, is that I didn't really go to anyone for help. I just told myself to suck it up, or the bullies would tell me to grow up. Maybe these kids who are killing themselves feel like their being "babies" or "tattle tales" when it comes to getting help. Everyone is saying help the bullies, help the BULLIED too, to stand up for themsleves and that asking for help is not a bad thing. But when it comes down to when they DO ask for help either from parents or teachers, and nothing is done about it, something needs to be done. My whole point is, teach kids who bully that its not going to be tolerated and who are bullied to speak up and stand up.

• All I am saying is that the school (employees in its entirety) and parents need to be proactive in the war on bullying. Of course I see that schools are overburdened, that is why parents need to be more vigilant (sp?) in particular. Bullying has been around for decades, but people tend to take a blind eye to it. Now it is finally in the hotseat and it is good to see that with the exposure that this topic is getting, maybe measures can be taken. I know many schools have an anti-bullying procedure, but none have been forced to deal with it. I would like to hear about the schools that are taking a stand on this touchy subject. And taxes are already up, and to me it's a moot point anyway, as long as all the children are safer.

• I'll bet a good percentage of these people who shriek "where were the schools in all this?!?!?" are tea party types who think the government is some evil "commonist" conspiracy. But as soon as something goes wrong they go pointing making demands on that same gubment. So, the schools should engage in extensive social policing? Want your taxes to go up to pay for it? (Chirp chirp) everyone who believes that already overburdened school systems can do everything for free, raise your hand, so we can have tinkerbell come pay you a very special visit.

• Once your child comes to you and tells you what is going on at school or the school contacts you about the bullying(if they do) and nothing gets any better for the child; (No child should ever be assaulted at school not even once.)Why are parents not going straight to their local police department and filing charges against all the bullies involved? It may be hard to prove and nothing maybe done at first, but if the bullying continues and you get as many entities involved as possible. I guarantee it will stop. Police, School board, CPS, County Supervisors, Local newspapers. If I as the parent had to take out the article myself about the school my child was attending and the school was doing nothing to stop the bullying, I would expose the school.

• What's really sad is that the boys who did the bullying are still there. I will talk to the mom because they kicked her son in the privates and who knows if that would have permanent damage??? ALSO, this is the same school who had 2 teachers bickering in the halls, one grabbed another (in front of students) but the teacher who was "assaulted) was terminated!!! WTH??? Alot of parents and students alike were ticked off about that incident too. (happened 2yrs. ago) I don't understand the school systems at all!!!!

• @Daisy: Are you kidding me? That is so like nowadays' teachers. The rules made to protect students and teachers are looking more and more like ways teachers can shimmy out of doing the other part of their job- protecting kids. I mean kids go to school for 6-7 hours a day and see these people more than their own family. School staff needs to take their role in fostering children seriously. I forgot who made this comment on the 13 year old that hanged himself but it was basically like "If the math teacher shoved the English teacher into a locker, there would be more consequences than what happens to students who do that." I feel so sad for this kid.

• oh geez, poor guy. i rally behind his mother for trying to do something positive to keep it from happening again. Unfortunately she has another story close by to use in her arguments. daisy, since i have been reading about the bullying and the suicides due to bullying, i asked a friend about her situation with her son. She said that he had been in a fight at school and way suspended for a week because of it. She asked what the other boy got (as he supposedly was the bully that initiated it). They would not tell her! Said it was not her concern and they do not share the punishment of other children with anyone. I thought to myself, WTH? Her kid was in a fight, there were two that were involved, and both should know that the other one got the same treatment for the same violation. This was several years back, as her child is now 24. He is a body builder and lifeguard...no one picks on him anymore AT ALL!

• I witnessed bullying in my daughters school, and I went to the playground moniter and chewed her out in front of everyone! 2 boys were kicking and punching another, and she wasn't 10 feet from the situation, and she was talking to another aide! Then, I got told to leave the premises because it wasn't my concern!!!! (not my child!) I then contacted the boys' mothers, and took matters to them. They had no idea what was going on because the school didn't contact them at all!! They were very appreciative and didn't make me feel like I'd overstepped any boundaries at all. WTH is wrong with these schools?? Are they so frightened to step in due to personal safety? Or just afraid to get sued?? Things sure have changed since I was in school.

• I'm starting to wonder why these mothers didn't just pull their kids out of school, rather than having to deal with the school doing nothing to protect their children? If I had to make more than one trip to the school office and my child was still being bullied, I'd put them in a different school or home school them, even if only temporarily. It's really sad that it has to come to this, though. It's sad that that we as a country have some of the unsafest schools in the world.

• I hate to even read the news anymore-children committing suicide. It's too much.

• Its been my experience bullies male and female are often times "teachers pet" types and the so-called elite students of their grade, class or school. The worst bullies are very often the children of those who hold positions of authority in and around the community and are known to throw their weight around i.e., the PTA president, Chief of Police, head coach and so on. Hence the reason school officials look the other way. Very few school officals ever protect bullies who belong to community outsiders. Ugly truth, people.

• Where is the WAKE-UP CALL button for schools all across America???????

• This is so sad. What ever happened to respecting others? I blame parents for not teaching their children RESPECT for other human beings. As for the teachers and school, it is their responsibility to protect children from this. So sad. :(
