One might presume the incident dripped of race -- at least that's how Mississippians initially saw it. But it turns out Barrett was murdered for far more pedestrian reasons, and none of them seem to prove innate honky supremacy.
In his various confessions to police, McGee says he killed Barrett for A) being cheap and B) getting homo on him.
McGee was pissed because he'd only been paid $25 for a day's worth of yard work. Barrett, we can presume, was still working from 1843 slaveholder pay scales.
So McGee went to Barrett's house to demand more money and use his computer. That's when Barrett made a sexual advance, dropping his pants. But instead of blowing the incident off by saying, "Sorry, man, I'm strictly a pull hitter," McGee decided to stab Barrett. 16 times in all. An autopsy revealed Barrett also suffered multiple blows.
McGee then put a gun in Barrett's hand and burned down his house, trying to make it look like a suicide. He apparently never thought that 16 stab wounds might not look like suicide. When police recovered the body, Barrett was wearing only his underwear and a third of his body was burned.
McGee tried to tell police it was Barrett's fault for not paying him enough money. In the end, it seems the two deserved each other.
