I have complained about having a federal standard for the worst crimes so we don't have such disparity in sentencing. But I believe humans who engage in torture, and raping a woman is torturing her should be executed. A man, in this case two men, went out of their way to not only imagine doing the very worst to her, they proceeded to in fact realize their monstrous fantasies. If an American Soldier were to have done so with the object being an Afghanistan Taliban or al Qaeda, some of us would be calling in the United Nations, Amnesty International and the Hague against them so fast it would be almost comical. And our media would replay, over and over and over again any incendiary images or details, cry pitiously for the aggrieved, identify with the tortured, and denounce their own citizens repeatedly, ad nauseum, without mercy. Instead, because this ex-soldier, who has clearly fallen quite far from grace, committed these heinous acts against a fellow citizen, a mere woman, too many people still think that she was not killed and so her violators should receive what has been traditionally doled out for such crimes. Yes, she has been killed. Her outer form still functions. Her speech will make sense. She will perform at her job. But is she still alive? No, not the her that lived until mere moments before she was stripped of her humanity. That woman was killed. What is left is a different woman. Someone now burdened with a tortured mind, a tormented soul, a broken spirit and lifetime of having to compensate. All without much help from any of us. Because she "looks" alive.
