That was on March 17. Now, after nearly three months of hospitalization and rehab, Josie Ratley is finally going home.
She suffers from brain damage and has had to relearn the most elemental things in life, like how to walk, get dressed and brush her teeth. Though she's apparently doing much better, her release from rehab seems as much about our callous health care system as it is about improvement in health.
The Ratley family's lawyer says Medicaid won't pay for her to stay in rehab indefinitely. And though they've received $50,000 in donations to help with medical costs, that money can get burned up fast given the severity of Josie's injuries. (You can make a donation here.)
So they've decided to get her outpatient treatment to stretch those dollars further. It may not be the best of all worlds. And it may bring shame to the richest country in the world when its health policies neglect an injured little girl. (Isn't that the essence of true family values?) But until this changes, Josie is the face of American health care.
